Default Ideal oil return/drain hose size? from turbo to oil pan

what is the ideal oil return/drain hose size? the inside diameter? someone told me that 1/2" is safe and commonly used. mine is smaller(1/4") and i observed that i have alot of oil sludges on the hose itself coming from the mouth of the return plug from the turbo. i suspect i have a problem there.

does the size vary depending on the turbo?

another question is my oil return is angled like 1 O' clock just about near 90 degrees. is that ok? TIA </TD></TR></TABLE>

Your drain line must be at least 1/2" inside diameter and you should not use a 90 degree on the drain anywhere.

So you understand how the oil returns to the block/oil pan, I will explain it to you. The only way oil gets back to the oil pan from your turbo is by gravity. When you have a under sized oil drain or 90 degree turn in line the oil backs up in the turbo and goes out the compressor and turbine side piston rings inside the turbo causing the turbo to smoke and then fail. The oil return must be free flowing and unrestricted.

most of your fittings for the return will be a -10 (5/8)

makes alot of sense turbonado. that explains why my car "sometimes" put out alot of white smoke. thats why i had it checked. and the mechanics said that the culprit might be in my oil return hose. i thought the turbo was messed up but they told me if it is, then it should be putting out white smoke all the time with a nasty sound.

they told me to replace a bigger hose first and change the angle a little bit. might save me alot of buck

oh by the way, that hose was there since day 1. also put out white smoke "sometimes" since day 1 also. been boosting for 1 year and 2 mos now. do you think it might have damaged my turbo seals and all? having that oil pressure in my turbo. i mean.

any comments?

turbodano, im sorry, i explained the angle part wrong. my drain line does not have a 90 degrees angle nor a section where the oil is restricted. i meant that my drain line is slightly leaning to a curtain direction, but is still in a smooth "letter J" like shape. i have to practice my speech more

As long as it is all in a downward slope with no sharp bends it is fine. Like Boostedcivic said it must have a -10 or -12 return which will have atleast 1/2 " ID.

-xx is the an size
an = army navy
i dont know where they get the -xx size, i think it has to do with gauge, kinda like 00 = welding ground and stinger wire, 2ga usually = battery cable, i think the - (negative) may have to do with the fact it is an inside diameter? i just got done driving 2 hours ill look later.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the number part of the AN system is based on 1/16th's measurements, i.e.~

-6 = 6/16" or 3/8"
-8 = 8/16" or 1/2"
-10 = 10/16" or 5/8"
