ok guys so i picked up a gsr cluster today from a junk yard and found a wiring diagram online somewhere just wondering if anyone had any others to double check every thing is right.
also for the vss i know u have to change it. do i need to pull the whole thing out of a transmissioon or just the plug... confused some one help with this please..

I have actually been looking into doing this myself but only with a ls cluster from a 94. they look identical to a gsr, only difference being the redline.
For the vss you do need the whole thing. the part that goes in the trans, and the piece thats got the connector for the harness on it. there one piece so i'm not even sure how you'd get them seperated lol.
As far as wiring schematics go i've only found two sites with info on that and also info towards the swap. neither of them is a complete end all be all solution to what your trying to do but it should be a good start. These may even be sites you've already found cause i know its all i could find.

Theyre not competely accurate i can tell you that for sure. i've been using them in combination with schematics and wiring diagrams from ALLDATA to create a more accurate pinout table that will show what every wire is in an EF thats needed for the swap and its color, and then the corresponding wire and color for the 94+ ls, gsr cluster. Once i do the swap over i'll probably post a writeup, and include the pinout table i've created

Here it is and it is 100% accurate. I used it to wire in my dc2r cluster in my 88 rex

Wow thats crazy i've honestly searched the **** out of these forums and google using any search terms i could think of pertaing to gauge cluster swaps and nothing popped up for that page. On that note i reckon i'll still do the write up but i'll make it pertier and use colors for the wire designations lol, and i'll include the pin outs for the hatch open light, and door open light.
None of the diagrams or information I found online matched what I had in my car. The *BEST* way to do it is to use your head, trace the pins to the back of the cluster on both clusters, label the pins, and do it that way.
Blindly following "swap guides" and online pinouts causes more problems than they solve.

But tracing wires back to the cluster can be quite confusing to say the least. each harness most likely will have different numbers of wires compared to the one they are matching it up to, all of which with different colors. Without looking at a schematic theres really no good way to figure out where they all go. the BEST way for me and for most i would gather is to look at electrical diagrams/schematics of the vehicle they own, and of the vehicle from which the cluster has come out of. Then match up the corresponding wires accordingly. You could use a helms manual i suppose, which i believe has this information, or better yet if you have access to ALLDATA online like i do, getting this information is quite easy.

Have you looked at the back of the cluster?
There's generally just 3 wires for each instrument. The rest are lights, most of them are on a common power/ground. The instrument wires are labelled on the clusters.
Not sure how it could be less confusing... you don't even have to ohm anything out. I'm not trying to be insulting, but this is where it creates more problems than it solves to have "guides" for everything. Like I said, my car did not match the wiring charts provided online. The final say is what's actually on the car, and that's where it's best to point people - if they can't figure it out, why are they doing it in the first place?
