Default how accurate is the oem tach?

i'm about to get my fully build my bottom end back from the machine shop. it's going to be a itb n/a build. then it dawned on me that i needed to get a tach to carefully watch my reving. but then i wondered how accurate is the oem crx tach. so i searched here and basicily on found on thread that acually answered this question but it was vague.two members here stated that there's were off by a 2-3 hundred rpm 6-7 hundred rpm.

now first off, i know getting a afterarket tach would be the way. but the truth of the matter i'm trying to keep it looking like a stock with no attraction to theives. so if/and it's true that the tach is off by several rpms. is there anyway to dail it in to match the actual rpm?

also i'll be converting my rex from ODB0 to ODB1, with the engine light being a shift light. i was going to use crome but i decided to go with etune.

thanks

From my testing, I found my UKDM tach to be off 2-300 off from my auto meter.

I've heard a few things, and my idea would be wire a tach up and test to see how far off it is.

I don't even look at my tach on any of my CRX's I know where to shift. If you have a rev limiter setup in the proper RPM and you know your car well you will rarely look at your tach.

Again why with a light to tell you when to shift, your going to end up doing it by ear anyways.

As stated above borrow a tach and compare.

***$nyper i was also kind a asking that without actualy saying: is it posibble to hard wire my oem tach to be almost independed of the rest of my gauges.

crx toad you're correct about learning your car and the way it sounds. but i'm getting my motor back, i'm going to slap in and send it to the dyno to have the engine broken in and tuned.

the problem of the matter it's not going to be like my oem motor i'm going to be able to rev abit higher. and untill i get comfortable with it again in want to make sure i rev at the right optimalm rpm for the bet powerband.(i hope i said that right) and like everything else once the frequencey of the rev is recorded in my head then i'll know when to hit that mark without looking at the tach.

Ah if your going to put it on dyno that is the perfect time. The dyno will give you the RPM and you can see if your on/off on the OEM tach.

Wired direct like an after market tach just stock location and gauge are you asking? If so, it might be do able, i'm no wiring guru, and if it is it'll be a pain probably.

You are right on a new motor it takes some time, and honestly even with a few K miles on lsvtec it's just pure loud past 6K I like having a tach for it.

To the OP;
I know that the other two members that posted on this thread are a lot higher on the HT pole than myself, but for what it's worth I've had about 50 cars and at least 15 or 20 of those were EF's. Every EF I've ever had was pretty darn close to accurate on the factory tach. I don't think it's so much how far off the stock tach is, but the fact that it just isn't as responsive to quick RPM changes as an aftermarket tach. You gotta figure a car with 250k miles that's 15 years old, that needle has traveled back and forth a few million times. A brand new tach is going to be more responsive to quick changes in RPM, not to mention the technology of a tach has probably been improved since then too.
