How do I replace the rear main seal on my 99 Honda Accord V-6?
Can someone direct me to a good do-it-yourself article on how to replace the rear main seal on my 99 Accord V-6? I have a pretty bad oil leak from there. I am pretty handy and I have swapped engines and such before but not on a foreign car.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Support the engine from the top with a crossing bar, then you have to drop out the front subframe, then remove the trans.
Now for your top tech tip of the day
I had several that didn't actually have bad rear mains but the oil channel plate that mounts on the back of the block was leaking
#4 in the pic, it has no gasket and is sealed with Honda sealer, I'd hate to see you do the job twice

Thanks for the info, It looks like oil is dripping down from the little cover plate near the back of the engine. Does this sound familiar for a rear main seal leak?
Generally the trans also has an inspection plate that you can remove to look down inside the bellhousing and you could probably see through there if it's the rear main dripping. But hondadude is right, you need to drop the trans to get to the rear main.
