buying S2000+moving to san diego
I'm simultaneously moving to San Diego from Philadelphia and buying an s2k (have been car less the past two years since my crx left in college). I can do these two events in any order because the company is paying for me to relocate, including my vehicle. I could just as easily move and buy said s2k out there. Will I save any money by buying in Philadelphia? I'll have to reregister in CA anyways so I might just save some cash buying it out there. Any thoughts?
I would've posted this in the gen discussion but it won't let me with my new (3rd or 4th name).

thats an excellent point about the weather.. not sure where I'll be living yet but do know the location of the job. I guess I will compare and see if there is any substantial disparity in price, im assuming it would be cheaper in PA. being able to drive it cross country when I first get it would be very cool!
yep according to kelly blue book's site an arbitrary 2004 s2k in good condition w 30,000 miles costs $1300 more in san diego than in philly! gooood to know

and it may seem like a "cool" idea to drive cross country in an S2000, but it's not. i cant imagine driving mine for 10+ hours a day.

the cost to drive cross country is irrelevant because the company is reimbursing me for any costs... a free trip! I was more concerned with the cost of re registering. I do think driving an s2k might get kinda old by the time I reach Pittsburgh. I think I'll borrow my dads explorer to drive out and keep for a few weeks/months until I'm fully settled and moved in. Then I'll look for an s2k if my daily commute is very short. If its very long I might settle for a Fit.

maybe you should skip the S2000 and just get the Fit instead.

Its not a matter of driveability or comfort. Its a matter of ridiculous gas prices. I used to daily drive my CRX 1.5 hrs each way on 95 and through west philly that rode on koni yellows/HR race, had no air conditioning, gutted interior, and was black. I didn't even mind it and I consider a bone stock S2000 a bit more streetable than that.
heres some advice.
i just moved out from new england for college. i left my fwd at home. After selling my prelude I bought an s2k at a dealership about an hour west of boston and got a great deal on it... lower than mass prices and wayyyyy lower than CA bluebook. I shipped it out for 900$ last fall. I think that was the smartest route moneywise. The car was an 02 with 37k miles and i got it for 16,9.
good luck.
mike.

I could do that also... Company would actually pay for shipping the vehicle up front and I wouldn't even need to be reimbursed. That is a great deal.. Pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. I just would like to know how my commute is going to be before I buy anything, which is sort of a catch 22.
I dunno man I loved the fit but it dawned on me its really a mini mini van. On the other hand new civics are really starting to grow on me. If I'm able to take public transportation to work or ride my bike the s2k is the route I will likely take.
Get an s2000 locally, install 4.77 gears and then drive it out there
DONT get a fit... judging from your CRX you would rather have something fun at the expense of comfort and a mini-minivan(fit) is not going to be fun, IMO.

The S2Ki group out here in San Diego is really large and fun. But it sounds like you aren't 100% set on getting an S2000. So don't get one until you are. I'd also recommend buying an S2000 out here. You can find really good deals on them by buying from a private seller. I've seen them go for as low as 12.5k for AP1s.

I would've posted this in the gen discussion but it won't let me with my new (3rd or 4th name).

If the company is paying for your vehicle, then I don't see any reason NOT to buy a S2000 in California. Company is paying for it, so why do you need to worry about saving money?

holy crap, this quote should define a life upgrade!
"I'm simultaneously moving to San Diego from Philadelphia and buying an s2k"
just like most cities in CA, the public transit is wack in SD, so give up that idea.
BUT SD has the best free flowing freeway setup compared to other big cities in the state, so you won't have a problem flying all over the place in the s2k!
i spent my summers in SD while growing up. if you enjoy seeing tons of beautiful women any time you walk out your front door, endless beautiful beaches, and amazing weather, you are going to be happy one happy guy. if you don't like those things, end yourself

I think I'm gonna hold off on buying for now because I have permission to borrow the family explorer until I'm all settled in. This would be a bit more cross country friendly and gas is reimbursed so its really a win-win. I'm stoppin by the dealers tomorrow, specifically to test drive the new Si and a Speed3.
My life is pretty sweet right now. Oh and this move is all going down when I get back from a 6 week trip to Europe that begins next week!
