Default Hydraulic clutch versus cable clutch....

I have heard many people say one is better than the other. I heve never really put much thought into it. I kinda prefer the hydraulic due to the reduced efort but I like the cable for the adjustability.

I have ben thinking on converting the KZ into a hydraulic clutch but wanted a couple opinions on the matter.

I read into this some today and a guy swapped over his RC51 to a cable and he said its actually easier to pull then the hydro and is better all around, but thats just one guys opinion.

you can just increase the size of the hydraulic master cylinder and make it multiples easier to pull than the cable conversion. The cable conversion would be cheaper tho.

I know for DS bikes such as the DR-Z a cable is better due to backwoods reliablity. There are less chances of a cable leaving you stranded on an offroad bike than a hydro setup.

I just want to see what some of the more experienced riders have to say.

Yea I gotcha. I'm not an expert though..lol But from cars we have had zero problems from a mechanical clutch as to where with the hydraulic we would be pulling out all the time to repair and it just isn't that great. But I mean thats a totally different setup and all but thats just what I know from cars..

Cable conversions (specifically for the RC51) are nowhere near cheap and isn't done to give you an easier pull. People prefer cable because you have more feel of the clutch and are able to slip it for things like race starts. Another advantage is not having to bleed your clutch which can be a pain. Cable clutches have the disadvantage of having to adjust the cable as it stretches and can break on you. Hydro clutches will only fail you if one of your seal blows and I've rarely heard of this on bikes. If you keep up on your maintenance you should see any leaking before it'll actually fail on you. I've had it happen on my car though but after like 180,000 miles and 12 years.

A brembo clutch master cylinder is actually less then what it costs to do the cable conversion.

Then why do KTM's come with hydraulic clutches? What bike won CMCC, and Endurocross this year? oh yea..KTM with a hydro clutch...

but hey, you know better, you used to race cars...errr umm...

edit: and what bike seems to dominate National Hare and Hound? yea..it has a hydro clutch

The lever itself is cheap since lots of bikes come with them stock. Someone has to come up with a custom mount to actuate the clutch. Here's a picture of thorsten's.

again I say, quit swinging from my nuts.

BTW, I was aware that KTM uses them, whereas 95% of the manufacturers do not. There has to be a reason for it. It is much easier to carry a spare cable with you in your backpack instead of carrying a hydraulic hose, tools and brake fluid to repair such things.

No09, that conversion bracket looks hardcore. I am glad I do not have to worry about such things. Man.

There is a reason the NUMBER 1 selling off road bike is the KTM XC series. You don't need to carry spare anything, because KTM's are damn bullet proof.

You should realize the reason why Japanese bikes don't come with the majority of good stuff is that symbol posted above. I do not miss the days of buying my bikes for the season, and other then suspension, spending a grand on parts just to make the bike half way rideable. Pegs, bars, triple clamps, wheels, hubs..ALL JUNK on japanese bikes.

For what it's worth, every bike I've ever owned has had a hydro clutch and I love them. I've ridden bikes with cable and really don't notice a difference. It's whatever you're used to imo. eh

I wish my daytona had one. I personally believe they're far superior to cables.

A clutch is a clutch is a clutch is a clutch.

I couldnt care less what type of clutch a bike has. It definately shouldnt be at the top of your list when choosing a bike. I've ridden both and own both (superhawk and f4i) and I couldnt really tell you what the difference is. I'd guess on the street a hydro clutch is more of a "bling" factor <U>if</U> it is advertised so.

The manufacturers put the type of clutch they feel is needed for the type of bike it's on so it's not a matter of clutch vs. cable, but a matter of clutch vs. cable for said bike.

I dont care if a bike has a cable clutch, a hydro clutch, or a hamster wheel powered clutch.....just let me shift, please and thank you.

hydro clutch = less maintenece and less of a chance of your average rider to forget to lube a cable.
