need help!!..just put B16 v-tech in my crx...
ok guys please..anyones help would me awesome. My bro in law which is a machianc put a b-16 in my crx cause he said he really wanted to work on it and make it a speed bullet. Well when he hooked it all up and put in the engine we started having some problems. When i put the car in reverse the CHECK ENGINE light goes on and my V-TEC shuts off...but if i shut the car off and turn it right back on...the check engine light is now off and the V-tech starts to work again??...whats that all about?...and now the main problem...when i drive my car.the engine puts out a smell threw the vents of gas and oil. I will be driving the car for 15 minutes and when i get out..it smells like i just got done working at a gas station!!!! I am almost positive its coming through the vents but it also stinks in my car even if no heat or air is on...and the worst of all this... is that my bro in law and sister are now seperating..and he doesnt care about helping me with these problems on my car..so not only have I lost a friend..but it seems like I am losing my car too....PLEASE HELP WITH ANY INFO IF YOU KNOW WHATS GOING ON!!!!!

It's VTEC friend. V-TECH makes phones. And it only works at high RPMs so I dont know how it shuts off when you're in reverse.
noo noo...i mean when i put it in REVERSE....it sets my CHECK ENGINE light to go on...then after that no matter what gear im in the v-tech wont work...i know it kicks in at high rpm...but it wont kick in at all.and the check engine will remain on whether i drive 5 miles or 500..but if i turnt he car off..then turn right back on...the CHECK ENGINE light is off...and unless i put back in reverse..i have no problems
from the sound of it you have a real problem expecially when you come in here with really bad engrish, grammar, and names for things you have no clue how it works. I'd find someone that knows what the are doing or take a crash course in honda swaps. I would think you guys have all your wiring wrong. what ecu did you use? what code are you throwing? what version of ecu are you running (obd0, obd1, obd2). You really have a problem if you dont know this stuff.
THEN YOU RETARD:
you spelled it wrong after the guy told you how to spell it! your not going anywhere with that car if you cant even take directions on how to spell............................................. ........................................
VTEC

VTEC
You need to figure out what CEL you are throwing. Once the CEL has been tripped, your ECU is going into safe mode; which disables VTEC, lowers your rev limit, and pulls timing.

I'd be more worried about the fuel smell right now. Are you sure the check engine light is persistent with putting it into reverse? For your engine to throw a code, something has to be operating incorrectly. What gear your in doesn't effect how your engine runs at all.
Is the fuel return line hooked up correctly?

yeah its real persistant...everytime i put in reverse it sets off the check engine like..and the ******* above you is giving me **** because im not some "pro" with this stuff. Well I never said i was...i trusted my bro in law with all this stuff and now he just gave up on it..so im hoping some of you guys can help me. yes the fuel line is hooked up i think but the gas smell is horrible when i drive it. I know it doesnt matter what gear i'm in that sets off the v-tec but what im saying is every single time i put it in reverse it sets off the check engine light. I remember when it was giving me the problem my bro in law found out what code it was throwing off...and then said that it has nothing to do with it...its just a weird situation ...also when we put the engine in the third motor mount ISNT EVEN HOOKED UP!...,y bro in law said there was no place to hook it up to..so it just sits at the bottom of the engine not hooked up.

First off, don't come in here asking for help and calling others a-hole when they are pointing out the obvious (even more so whiteknightef, he's well respected here). It is hard enough to diagnose issues without furthering the complication of you now knowing what you are doing or talking about. Not trying to give you a hard time, just giving you some common sense for this forum.
First off, your not going to solve this today. Your best bet is to understand your swap first hand so you can help us help you. Go to the FAQ here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1508680 and read up on the swap details, etc. Keep scrolling down, you will find much info on common swap problems such as yours.
As far as the gas smell, you are probably running OBD0 and not both o2 sensors. This will make your car run rich and have a gas smell outside and inside your cab. Then look up in the FAQ on how to read check engine codes, look up the code and search for a diagnosis. It's all been covered. Good luck!

nah bro its not coincidence..it does it everytime/EVERYTIME i put my car in reverse it sets off the check engine light and v-tec shuts off..until i restart it again...i was talking to this one guy with a crx and he said he thinks it could be the heater coil that is making my car smell like gas and oil. sound like that makes sense to anyone??

Same here. What cel is it throwing?? It's freaking annoying to see VTECH!!!!!!

sounds like the reverse switch wires are hooked up to something else on the motor. first watch the LED on the ECU for flashes and count them to get your code or codes. this will point you in the right direction.
then i would look at the front bottom of the transmission and unhook your reverse wires. that will fix the check engine light (CEL). then follow those wires to see where the heck he hooked them up...hopefully a system related to the code you found.
maybe he has something wired wrong, maybe a problem at the ecu. look for a label on the ecu with a long letter/number combination...mine says PR3. yours may be the same or PW0 or something else entirely. let us know what you find

Which motor mount? Theres four. Is it at the back (rear transmission mount), front ( front transmission mount), left or right?
I've seen car's run fine without rear transmission mounts, it just puts undue stress on the other three mounts.
Get back to us with what code it was so we can help you more.

ok guys i talked to my bro in law...he said to let you all know that he found out that the heater core is bad..and since i have no heat..he said he thinks the main problem is the heating core and that is what is triggering off the bad smell in/outside the car. also he said everything is hooked up right with the wiring and that he did all the right swaps and that both 02 sensors r hooked up..he has done a lot of engine swaps so i do have have in his work...but does the heater core sound right?..does anything think that is why my car can be smelling so bad of gas. I feel like Im high when i get out of the car from the gas smell...lol..let me know !
A bad heater core would smell like coolant. The bad gas smell means there is a problem. The most common problem for smelling gas is a kinked or rotted gas tank filler tube or neck, Right where you put in the gas.
In these cars, that'll stink it up in no time.....or your return line has a problem...
The return line starts right off of the end of your fuel rail at the regulator.

You might also wanna check your fuel filter.
Don't think mine was clogged but was working well until a point it was slowly squirting out gas in the connection of one of the lines on top of the fuel filter. WIll be located on the firewall in the passenger side of your engine bay
Saw a wet residue on top of the fuel filter.
Good luck with your car man, you do might wanna look at some of the info they already have pinned around here, it'll help you alot.
Just for a heads up for the grumpy people, gotta realize there will be people like this.

hey guys i talked to a mechanic...he said that its the heater core...he said that he will charge about 500 but most places would charge around 900 cause he has to take apart the dash and such. I really am not an idiot but im not really good with cars, like i said i put all my faith in my bro in law but he cant work on it now. Does that price sound about right for a mechanic to be doing labor on my crx. labor plus heater core for 500? let me know guys
also im getting pics up soon of my crx..it is light blue with green pearl in it..looks sweet with the body kit, etc. I'll be getting pics up tomorrow i hope
