took my car out for a test drive yesterday. wanted to see if my car would still overheat. same problem again. i replaced the t-stat twice and flushed out the coolant twice. car still overheats. let the car cool down for 30 mins and added water and on the way back home car did not overheat. can somebody give me the simple answer and tell me it's the "radiator?" i still doubt it's the radiator cus i see no leaking? what else could it be?
i almost got stranded in the IE yesterday. scary **** to be stranded out there alone. before the central cali trip i replaced t-stat and flushed-overheated on the way home. yesterday to the IE-overheated on the way there. what is going on?

if the radiator came off or a car that a head gasket blew or a sleeve cracked it can blow all the finns that the water flows through out and pinch the fins that air flows through closed blocking all the air flow. or your water pump impeller is coming apart or something. has it ever had green and orenge coolent mixed together?

so you're saying it could be a head gasket?

Take the car to a power car wash and blast out the fins on the radiator first before you replace the radiator for no reason and make sure its "burped" of all the air you can get out of it.

sorry for my ignorancy. but what is a fin? and where is it at? is it the fan or you talking about the big filter in front of the radiator? it sucks not not knowing a whole lot about this.
not sure about the san fran trip if its being like this. i don't want to be stuck and
on the side of the road.

ok lets see if i can be a little help since i had this happen to me. I have a 95 hatch and everything was fine until i put a b18 swap. burped it(meaning getting the air out the system) then i started overheating but never would reach all the way on hot.
i took my t-stat out and left it out for the time being and gauge would get about half
so i tried to bleed the air out by the valve(upper radi hose where it goes to the head) and then my gauge would read about half and would stay about half. i still wasnt happy with that reading
so i bought a dual core radi and replaced mine. performed all the steps over and made sure i got all the air out of the system
now i dont even get 1/3 most the time.

Try replacing the fan swith, radiator cap, new radiator, fan relay, water temp switch, waterpump, etc. you can replace many things you dont have to if you're not careful. You might have to take it to a mechanic to tell you what to do if you have that little knowledge.
A new radiator for your car is 32$ shipped from ebay, FYI.

f-ck it, leak or not i'm buying a new radiator.
thanks man!

Never had a problem with my CiViCs, but...
I digress...
If you'll pardon the pun, I had a domestic with a 'hot' 390 small block V-8.
Ran great for years, but all of a sudden started overheating VIOLENTLY - sounded like Lucifer was beating the inside of my motor with hammers when I shut it off.
The cure was...
I took my 3-pass radiator to a racing radiator shop (they built custom rads for race cars). They pulled off the tanks and said the core was 75% blocked - and, BTW, I take great care of my cars! It was just old age and minerals doing their thing...
They stretched my tanks, installed a new 5-pass core, and guaranteed it to 500 HP.
Back on topic...
No amount of flushing will help a core that's plugged - and it doesn't take much!
Matter of fact, rodding it out won't even help, in this scenario - all they'll do is poke holes in the core, trying to rod it out.
Soooo, after you're tired of playing around with it, I'd bite the bullet and get a new radiator.
The two best ways I know of wrecking a motor is 1) run it with no oil and/or... 2) run it with no water/overheat it.
If you don't get a handle on it soon, you're gonna be s-o-r-r-y!

thank you my man! thank you! this has got to be the next best step. some peeps mentioned head gasket, water pump, catalac converter? man, i'm laying those on the side! why not a dual core radiator! i'm going for it.
