John Staley and HART Racing Team - Break their own National Record
This weekend at the Summit Motorsports Park's B'Laster PB 50 Cavalcade of Stars the Honda Of America Racing Team (HART Racing) broke our own national record for E.T. First round of qualifying brought a 7.31 and second round yeilded a 7.29 E.T. and a damaged rear slick. We traveled to Summit Performance Parts and picked up some new slicks and missed the third round of qualifying. Sunday we ran the first elimination pass and put down an E.T. of 7.21 @ 179.9 mph to better our previous E.T. record of 7.29 @ 183 in the first round of eliminations winning the round and advancing to round #2. Then the rain set in and the remainder of the event was postponed until July 25th ~ 27th at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio.
Thanks for keeping up posted and those are some quick times for sure. That C3? motor is working well, seems like you may be able to squeeze a little more out of it. How are the other racers in your class accepting your honda entry and what kind of cars are you up against?
We have had a great reception from the NHRA, as well as, all the other teams. It has been one of our most enjoyable racing experiences. The NHRA Sportsman Series is just so well run. The people (Racers) are amazing, it's really a good time. As far as cars we are up against, you name it! We race Naturally aspirated 4cyl, 6cyl, big blocks, small blocks, some big blocks (cut in half) 4cyl., and just about anything people can come up with. Some cars have turbos, some have superchargers, some even have NOS. It's pretty crazy really, but it sure is a good time.

So you race against Bruno Massel in the Cobalt, correct? If so, that is a great class. I have always wanted to build a car for Comp. Eliminator, turbo 4 cyl. rwd! NHRA does seem to really embrace the diversity of that particular class. Hope you are having fun, and keep up the good work.

You guys posted about your performance before I could this time! Great job re-setting your own record! Man, you gotta lay off that CIC before you shoot yourselves in the foot!
Yes, we do race against Bruno and his Cobalt. This is what I have been saying, Great Class!

Nice work, congrats on the good runs. But you do know the goal in Comp Eliminator isn't to run as fast as you can. You are going to really kill the index. We could have went out there and ran in the 6's last year and destroyed the index. But that is not the smart thing to do. Hope to get to race with you soon. The lexus is coming back out soon in Comp. Probably Etown. Just watch the index for us too.
Yes, I agree the idea of comp isn't to run as fast as you can, the 7.21 was an error in judgement at best. However, correct me if I'm wrong but our index was 8.00 sec. Weren't you the first CC/AT car in history to ever lower the index (7.86)? We all have poor judgement moments, we are going to do our best to keep them to a minimum. We are very much looking forward to seeing the Lexus come back. The more tuner cars we get in the Sportsman Series the better it is for all of us. Justin's Lexus is a prize car for the Sportsman Series to have on board. We'll have to chat in person when you come back. In the meantime, we'll try real hard to watch the index, for the both of us, and everyone else.
They've had front wheel drive 4 cylinder turbo car classes for two years now. Check out your NHRA rule book for rules for AA/AF and BB/AF.
AA/AF: Maximum 153.00 cubic inches; turbocharged 4 cylinder, 4 valve only. Front wheel drive only, full tube chassis permitted. Minimum weight: GM Ecotec, 2050 lbs, all others 1750 lbs. Transverse or longitudinal engine orientation permitted.
Index: 8.00
Translation: In a really tough field (Englishtown, Chicago, Indy, St. Louis, for example) you're going to have to run around .50 under the index to even qualify. So, you'd better have a car that runs 7.50's to make it worth your while.
BB/AF: Maximum 153.00 cubic inches; turbocharged 4 cylinder, 4 valve only. Front wheel drive only, full tube chassis permitted. Minimum weight: GM Ecotec,
2350 lbs, all others 2050 lbs. Must retain transverse engine orientation.
Index: 8.60
Translation: A much better shot at qualifying, but you better have ".60 under" horsepower that you can pull out when you "need it." In other words, be able to run 8.00 when you are up against the wall.
Methanol allowed. 74mm turbo.
I've tried telling the NHRA that these indexes are way too harsh. They don't listen, so nobody comes out for the classes. Simple math.

NHRA Lucas Oils Sportsman Series is at Maple Grove this weekend. If you have your car done you should go out there and try to qualify. $25 per carload to get in! I must warn you: if you do go, get there tomorrow morning early, or else be prepared to park in the mud! Be prepared to be teched to death! Bob Lang and Tony Romano will peel your car into a million pieces! I know from experience!
By the way, I believe the payout is around $2000 depending on the event.
