Default Well, another one bites the dust to a tank slapper!

I got a call from my friend that I grew up with today. Patrick called me up to tell me that he completely totalled his breand new Yamaha R1 FIAT replica. He just got done with the break in and decided to stretch her legs. He went for a nice day of riding down to the beach and was on his way home at about 11pm. Well he told me that he was going about 65-70 in 3rd and wanted to do a quick dig to WOT. When he did, the front powered up without him realizing. Upon touching back down he got bucked off of the bike that started shaking violently.....infamous headshake when his front wheel touched back down. He said that he was going about 95-100 when he let off and he got ejected almost immediately.

The bike went topside and he managed to aviod the bike hitting hi but his gear did not protect him well enough. He was wearing a pair of Scorpion gloves and they just disentegrated. He has no meat on the left side of his hand.....it actually took it all the way to the bone and his jacket got soo hot from the slide that it gave him 3rd degree burns along his left side and back. His Arai Corsair has a hole worn through it from the slide.....absolutely amazing He spent two days in the hospital for treatment of his hand and burns.

He was wearing full gear with A* textile pants and SMX boots.

The bike was destroyed beyond recognition. During the accident, the bike tumbled soo violently that the ylinder head seperated and the forks wer ripped off. The bike tumbled soo bad that the license plate even got peeled off. They could not find the plate, part of the front wheel and bits of the fairings.

He has full coverage and is now going to use the money to pay off the loan and he is going to get a different bike now due to the fact that he can nolonger get a FIAT replica R1 due to the fact that they are a limited production bike......of which is rediculously overpriced.

Another squid bites the dust.

Glad he's ok, hopefully he'll learn that the 30 dollar monthly special gloves are not the ones to buy.

Patrick is FAR from a squid. This is his fourth bike. He just got rid of a CBR1000rr and got the R1.

The scorpion gloves are kinda pricey for what he got, but they deinatley did not hold up very well for a 100mph slide.......I don't think many gloves would have faired well. He has a pair of full length A* gloves to go with his jacket but he was not wearing them.

Fourth bike or not, his actions were conducive of squidliness. Accelerating from 60-90 in 3rd gear takes about 2-3 seconds on a liter bike, quick reflexes would have closed the throttle at about 1 second when the tire started to point towards the heavens; squidliness would have held it open and tried to ride it out on the street.

I'm sorry to here that he binned such a nice bike and suffered injury.

everytime I start thinking maybe I really don't need gear, its 80 degrees out, I see something like this. Guy doesn't sound like a squid, he just screwed up. Good gloves are important. I see so many people riding with no gear, walmart brainbucket, I just cringe. I know its not my skin and not my business, but its the chance you take. I'll continue to sweat.

From what he said, the front wheel came up just a little bit. He didn't even realize it was up. Pat knows how to ride a wheel stander. I am sure he would have faired better if was anticipating it. He said that as soon as he let off of the throttle, the bike started to shake viciously and bucked him of as it started toppling.

From what I understand, it sounds to me like a very small power wheelie that he didn't even realize happened until it was too late. He just accellerated about 30mph quickly and the results were not very good.

I like how you guys assume he was being a squid and not wearing gear and was riding wheelies while it was dark out. What happened to him could have happened to anybody really. He was not used to the bike and was unaware of its power. I would think he should have expected it a bit though, especially coming from a 1kRR.

Then I stand corrected.

I never said anything about his gear though, he was geared up better than most it sounds.

yeah, Pat is pretty responsible when it comes to riding. He usually does not speed on the streets or anything. That is why I like riding with him. We go out and cruise and just have fun. Maybe hit up the clover a couple times and head down to the beach and get some grub and gather up phone numbers

He usually reserves high speeds for the track. I know for a fact that at least once a month last year he went to the track. I went with him half of the time. He has a better job than I do He works for the power comnpany, we all know how those gravy jobs are

I hear ya, I have a similar sentiment. It is not how fast you get there, it is what you do with the speed you already have

First you say he's experienced, throw in some filler, and then say he wasn't used to the bike.

I know I didn't take a chance doing high speed high RPM pulls on my bike until I knew what'd it'd do.

Then why was he doing power wheelies at nearly 100mph? doesn't sound responsible to me.

He wore his hand down to the bone and only spend two days in the hospital? They really want to kick you out of the hospital ASAP these days.

Stories like this are one of the reasons I'm about to drop close to 300 bucks on a set of Held Phantom gloves.

Graphite, you are not welcome in this thread. I have asked you repeatedly to act like an adult. Instead you persist on acting like a pretentious *******.

oh shut up, I weekly hear from you saying how you thrashed it up in the canyons. I smell illegal speeds from you every time you are on the bike. You have no room to talk.

I will say the same to you as you said to Quicks66 in another thread......Quit following me around and swinging from my nuts.

I don't often agree with him, but he has a point.

Any kind of run that will pick the front up on the street is irresponsible.

It isn't? Your buddy wouldn't have cartwheeled down the freeway if he wasn't "getting there" quickly.

My Held's survived a 140mph, palms planted on the ground as brakes, slide down the track. I can still wear them. Just like consumer electronics - there is good gear, bad gear, and gear that's dressed up pretty like, but still trash.

Stop making excuses, and acting like your buddy immune to poor decisions because there are other people out there that make worse ones. I've logged a lot more miles than most other motorcyclists I know, over all kinds of conditions, on all kinds of bikes, and in all kinds of venus... and I'm still subject to idiot "squid" decisions. Everybody is.

Sucks to hear about your buddy, but at least he's alive and recovering...that's what matters. We all make stupid mistakes once, twice or many times...isn't that one of the reasons we ride, though? We're humans in the end, and the siren song of the throttle sometimes is hard to resist.

I wonder how leather would've fared on a crash like that. Thankfully, I got a pair of Helds (only heard good things about them), and in the future I'm planning on forking out the dough for some Held Phantoms.

Never said it wasn't. I specifically said that he is usually very responsible and usually does not speed on the streets. He should have not been doing what he did. He made a stupid mistake and he now has to live with it.

I was refering to myself, not Patrick. U ride a sport tourer and rarely over accellerate and I am usually just commuting or taking a leasure ride. I generally do not push the bike very hard.

He was not wearing a very good set of gloves. Like stated before, he has some good gloves but for some stupid reason he hose not to wear them. I am sure he will never make that mistake again.

They were leather on the back but pleather palms.......waste of money if you ask me. Scorpion

I'll concede. Like I said, I'm prone to fits of stupidity, myself.

I just wanted to clear up - I don't just ride a sport tourer. I've got the RT, a sumo, and a 600F4. And I'm trying to justify a liter fighter.

I meant to type "I", I hit the U instead and or some reason when I go back to edit, the entire middle section of my post is not there to edit, wierd.

I ride a Ducati Monster 900, 1977 KZ750 and I have a ratty 1974 CB750 that I let friends ride when they want to go on a ride with me. I just got rid of the Ducati 748s track bike. Taking a break from the shenanighans for a while.

The CB is mechanically sound but the paint is faded and flaking, there is rust on everything......even the grips suck I just have good ruber, good pads and it does not leak and runs extremely reliably.......which is all that matters.

Also, I do ride a bike with torque sometimes it is hard to resist acting stupid. I sometimes take my entrance road to the lake a little too fast, which is dumb because I am 15-20 minutes from any civilization.

haha, you read that way wrong

the pants were A* textile, they were fine. He was wearing an A* leather jacket, and the thing that melted was his skin. He slid on the same spot for so long that the leather got scorching hot and gave him 2nd and 3rd degree burns. They had to remove the jacket from his skin at the hospital. It survived the crash but not the doctors scissors and scalpals.

Damn. Now that scares me. Imagine without any gear. A friend went down on his R6 and wasn't wearing any gear sans some guantlets (don't know the brand, wasn't a popular know one) and a shitty lid. He got 3rd degree burns in almost 80% of his body, broken ankle, a couple broken fingers, some cuts in his head and concussion.

No broken bones?
