Just last night my CEL came on, I checked it today with the great tutorial provided on this site to see what the code was. Well their was 1 long flash, and 7 short flashes, which would be #17,(Which is the VSS).

My car's Speedometer has been not working for a long time, I just never cared to fix it.1992 civic has 209k, and runs and drives very smooth. Car has never let me down.

How Important is the VSS? and where exactly is it located? I was doing some reading here and I think I read something about it being in the tranny? Right now I really dont have the time to screw with it and get it fixed, but if it is going to directly effect my engine/tranny then I would like to get it fixed.

Really what im thinking now is "Its just a speed sensor, who cares?".....unless you guys can tell me otherwise.

its apretty easy fix, just one 10mm bolt and it comes right out. get a nice used one at the junkyard or ebay.

SO assuming that this is my VSS gone bad, where is it located, and from what angle do I replace it?

 

Well one important part about the VSS is that if it is not working your vtec is not kicking in as well. If i am not mistaken vtec kicks in at high rev and about a minumum of 20mph.

 

This link here is for changing transmission fluid. Here they take out the VSS and insert the fluid through here. So just follow these steps for taking it out. Basically very easy. Disconnect your intake and look straight down to your tranny and it will be right there.

so I have to change my tranny fluid to take off and put the new VSS on?

 

you dont have to change your fluid....the video shows where the VSS is and how to remove it.......one connector and one 10mm bolt and its toward the rear engine mount at the top of the tranny.....get one from a junk yard because theyre around $100 from the dealer
