b16 dropped valve need help.
My brother just had the head rebuilt from a local machine shop and the reworked the head and did a 3 angle valve job. My question? Is when they got to the valve they grinded the valves instead of replacing them. They said it was safe and that the didn't need replacing. I didnt think that this was a good idea but i'm not sure.Could this lead to the problem of dropping the valve? And also he did rev to 8500 by mistake. missed 5th. But I thought a b16 could do that.
if the valve stem run-out and roundness are within spec its safe(just watch how old the valves are) something else occured...grinding valves is a delicate machining operation there could've been human error involved...not sure what to tell you friend
Thanks, were not sure what to do because the machine shop is refusing to accept
responsability for the destruction. There saying it's not there problem. We asked for replace and the gave us grinding instead. So if anyone in the birmingham area or anyone taking there head to cylinder head services in bham al off finley blv. Don't, I later learned from jim at motovations motorsports, that this isn't the only problem he's seen from them... Others have made the same mistake resently.. We went to BBB. And I will do the best I can to prevent someone else from making the same mistake we made by using them...

You wont get any machine shop to accept responsibility for a dropped valve. You said yourself your buddy mis-shifted. Why would it be their responsibility?
Ya, the thing is ya he missed shift but the rev limit will not allow rev over 8500. in neutral
My b16 reved to 9200 by missed shift before "more then once" and nothing happened. And I know thats not safe but we learn the hard way some times. The head was on for 2 days not even 400 miles yet. thats were where confused at. If they had did what we told them to do in the first place I would completely understand. But they didn't. The very first time he got on it is when she came apart.

I hear your pain bro but when it comes to business' you should always get things in writing.... You thought that they would replace the valves and they didn't and I hope you didn't pay for new valves.... One more thing.. when it's cold outside valves like to float and esp. when your reving really high like in this case, in some cases or by an act of god you won't hurt the valve train but what I would suggest is that you go to an aftermarket dual spring setup to better asist the valves in shutting!
Wish you luck and let's just learn from our mistakes there is no other way in some cases!

there is no way...even if Stevie Wonder ground your valves..would there be any correlation between a valve dropping and grinding a valve. Grinding a valve aides in valve seal, meaning sealing to the valve seat. Has nothing to do with a valve pulling through the retainer(ti retainer with stock keeper), or a piston hitting the valve(whom ever installed probably never checked piston to valve clearance), or the valve "dropping".
You would have a better chance of seeing Jesus tomorrow then that happening from the work you described.. In fact, if Jesus himself came back and ground your valve, it still could have happened. Except, Jesus would have hopefully made you realize it wasn't his fault, and was beyond his control, even with his super machinist powers. And could have saved his reputation with the BBB...

Ya, maybe your right. I just hate it that he just had it fixed and then she came apart so soon. And I do mean soon. That friday we put the head back on drove home ,saturday we drove around for a while to break in. It was a good day no problems great weather. And sunday we put a new clutch and light weight fly on her and on the way home, not 5miles from home we did a 2nd gear pull to see the diffrence and it wat great. He was finally faster then me. Then boom in an instant it was over. And it's his first honda and he was proud of the car. I hate to sound like a *****, i'm really a understanding guy. Were Know little but in return learning a lot as we go. This is the first time using a machine shop before so thats why the concern. for the work that was preformed. but who knows . "Well", sorry to sound like a dick guys. In the we will prevail. This call for the work of !. ?????????b18c gsr!!!!!@@@@@@@@. LATA GATA>
