Default Turbo questions i couldnt find answers to

1) Should the dump tube be closed or open? what purpose does it serve?

2) On the charge pipes whats the recommened size to use, is going from 2 to 3" before the intake manifold recommended or try to stay wit hthe same size.

3) can you controller the boost level without a boost controller? is that boost adjustment on the wastegate? i have a tial 38mm. im going to have a aem ems just wonderin what do i do before i get it tuned.

been doing hours of research here, thanks for any info guys.

1) open dump or into exhaust. don't close it off!

2) I like to do a slight size bigger on the cold side after the intercooler to create a scavenging effect through the intercooler, I'd say 2.5" hot side, 2.75 or 3" cold side for 350whp or more.

3) nope. Wastegate sets boost at whatever the spring is, boost controllers manipulate the vac signal to the WG thereby adjusting boost. There is no control on the wastegate itself.

1.) The dump tube can either be routed into open air or recirculated into the downpipe. It depends on your preference and state regulations.

2.) Unless you're shooting for well over 400whp, you'll have no need for anything larger than 2.5". If you go larger and dont need the larger diameter for the top end flow, you'll merely experience more lag for no reason. I would say 2.5" on both sides. It'd really help to know your power goals and turbo.

3.) You can only raise the boost by way of a boost controller. There's no other way (other than changing the wastegate spring) to change the static boost pressure.

It says 7 psi spring, so am i limited to only 7 or when i get aem ems installed the tuner can make it go to 8-9 pounds?
another question, there is a port or fitting for a line right on the outlet where the air goes out of the turbine on the intake side where am i suppsoe to hook that line to? just a vacuum source?
thanks for all the info so far helping alot.

If its a current AEM system, you will be able to use it plus a boost solenoid to control boost. Otherwise you can spend $10 and buy a manual boost controler, which works just fine.

BTW all your questions are answered in the FAQ. The charge pipe question may not have been, but easy to discover by looking at setups similar to yours.

BTW2 you also would have discovered the 'cold side' is called the compressor, and the 'hot side' is the turbine. For the wastegate vacuum reference, you hook it to the manifold (after the throttle body), or right on the turbo if you have the availible nipple.
