Default Electrical nightmare

Hey all,

I have a 1990 CRX Si with a strange problem. When I turn my headlights on, it causes my brake lights to light up and they stay on. So when I'm driving down the road with my headlights on it looks like I'm stepping on the brake the whole time. Now when my headlights are off my brake lights come on when i step on the brake, but when i do hit the brake my dash lights up like it would if i turned on my headlights. The taillights leak so water get in there on the wires I dunno if maybe the water caused a short or something. I'm going to pick up some new taillight gaskets and see if that solves the leak. Anybody know whats goin on?

i bet you one of your running/brake light bulbs blew and fused the filiment together making one circuit. it happened to me check and replace it or to be sure find the blown one and see if the rest of the lights work ok with it removed.

matter of fact, one of the bulbs is actually blown, I'll have to buy a replacement bulb. So if i replace it my problem may be solved?

It definately sounds like some crossed wires. trace the brake light switch wires and look for where they cross. the brake switch is located on the pedal assembly.

do u have a single element bulb in a dual element socket?
also check all of the bulbs it might not seem blown but it could have fused the elements together. remove the bulbs in the rear except the third brake light. then turn on the headlights and see what happens to the third brake light

it sounds like your parking lights are back-feeding the brake lights and vice versa. the problem is definitely in the rear of the car. it is possible that one wrong bulb back there could cause this. i'd check/replace all 4 of the main taillight bulbs

Ok so I switched the one bulb that was only a singal element. That solves my original problem but now when I hit the brakes with the headlights on the left rear headlight goes out but the brake light comes on. I'm quite confused.

like grog said check and see if you found them all. replace all of the bulbs just to be on the safe side.
