Default Vtec Issues H22

The engine is an internally stock H22, and Vtec will not engage. We have tried almost everything besides tearing the head apart.

I have tons of respect for my tuner (turbogixxer) who has been helping me through this. But I am just throwing this out there in hopes that some other poor soul has had my troubles.

1. No CEL.
2. Plenty of oil.
3. Solenoid works.
3. Will change to hi-cam timing/fuel maps.
4. Recently replaced oil pan.
5. Good amount of oil pressure at the head.
6. No abnormal wear on the cams.
7. Tried other ecu's and even tried to force vtec via neptune.

The only thing left that I plan on trying is a new oil pick up. After that is is taking apart the head.

So if anyone has had any such problems please shoot away.

what system was used to tune it?

Have you tried to turn off the temp requirement? ( with the management system)
If the ECU for some reading is reading false operating temp #s then it may not allow it to engage because it thinks its still cold.

I had problems with vtec engagement and we just disabled the temp reading for vtec engagment and it works fine. . .

Just a thought . . .

Crome was my current ecu, and I am in the process of switching to Neptune so we tried my Neptune file with no luck.

Im pretty sure we have tried it with temp off.

Is this a jdm motor that was sitting? what oil pan are you using? did you try a different vtec oil press. and solenoid switch? low on vtec fluid?

Was this a motor swap in a non vtec car? My buddy put a h22 in his 95 accord and vtec would not engage. He put a brand new vtec solenoid on before tracking the wires to the ecu and the terminal was not plugged in the whole way on the ecu plug. Pushed it in more and vtec was working good ever since. Check the wiring. I doubt its something mechanical

vtec will still engage if you are missing the rubber o ring. i don't have it right now..

however if a pin is missing in the rockers it will not engage..

most likely missing a pin in the rocker if you tried to put vtec on a button and its on in the ECU..

pull the cams out and check each rocker to make sure all the pins are in there.

go figure. my stock h22 was missing one(rubber o ring) and I felt their was a problem at engagement....partial engagement if that.

Engine has never sat. Solenoid is clean as can be. Is it normal for healthy h22's rockers to seize?

The car is switching to the hi cam maps. The ecu's iv used are fine.

OK well we have vtec working. But the only way to describe it is weak. Quiet and not as much power as there used to be.

Now my question is if cam timing can give these results. The low end really hasnt been affected, but I was curious if the timing was slightly off it would be more noticeable on the hi cam?

Welp, found a fouled plug today and the car is still kind of quiet but the power is back. I guess the only way to find out is a dyno or going to the track.

Cam and ignition timing is dead on.

I do have an oil pickup on the way as well.
