What's the verdict on the D series Turbo?
In the future I am hoping to boost the D16y7 in my 98 lx sedan! First I am going to paint it and I just finished my auto to manual swap.
Anyhow - I am seeing this more expensive turbo setup with lots of components other kits don't have ( an ebay kit ) and I plan on only running 6 - 7 psi for a daily driver and managing with an already installed Apexi SAFCII.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW

Are kits like this absolute crap expected to mawl an engine or are they workable if you update some things to a higher level ( better waste gate, lines etc. )
I want to know cause any more then 800 - 1000 isn't an option for me and I'll have to just wait.
Thanks guys!

the turbo will blow up, so will your motor with a SAFCII, i give it 6 weeks. the down pipe will also fall off. the welds will brake. if the turbo holds up i give the motor 6 weeks TOPS. what injectors you going to run?
First of all, you need to search the Forced Induction forum. If you had, you would find that the turbo setup you're looking at is complete garbage. If you want a good setup its going to cost you a little. Read the FI FAQ (at the top of the FI Forum) and you'll learn a good amount about what you'll need and where to get it.
I'd like to get some 300+cc saturated injectors that work with my OBD2 manual ecu and i haven't chosen a fuel pump yet - My SAFCII worked wonders on my friends car before he decided to sell it ( his wastegate failed and he pushed 20psi through his ZC with no forged internals ) I plan on getting some major dyno time in when It's time.
I've got gauges and a wideband is coming next.... I mostly wanted to know how the ebay kits hold up in real life (I've seen the cheaper ones in action and they leak horribly after a short time etc ) I was curious if i'd habe any luck with a more expensive setup without going brand name. I don't do anything without good research which is why I'm here picking the minds of honda tuners.

doubt he needs a fuel pump for 6psi DD... he wouldnt need a fuel pump at 10psi DD... small *** turbo like that, only boostin 5-6psi, on a good tune he'd be good with 450's or maybe even smaller... dont try to drag the guy broke, give him some positive influence, he obviously doesn't have any boost knowledge..
OP, my ebay turbo kit "individually peiced together kinda turbo kit" ran super hard for 10 months straight on its original tune... i spent $772 bucks altogether for everything, "which even included some suspension parts", all off of ebay and my car was sick... sadly it just got stolen and completely stripped last week, but it was still runnin super hard when them [freak]ers demolished her...

you get what you pay for, those kits are in no way, shape, or form worthy enough to be thrown on a honda, or any car for that matter, its sad seeing people destroy their hondas with cheap pieces of ****
i had a turbo close to that one did great on 10psi... but i think im going full race kit or piecing my next kit going for 450 - 500 whp... my manifold never cracked on me but ive seen a few that have...you are taking a chance.
Don't waste your money on that. Either build it yourself or buy a good kit. I.E. peakboost, turbonetics, revhard, full race or love fab. They all make good ****.

You're telling this guy to spend $3k bucks to boost 6psi..?? lmao, just when i thought the night couldnt get any better... This guy is obviously not looking to spend money out the *** on some fully blown track civic, he wants a nice lil reliable setup, and buying one with a 3 year warranty "as mine came with, and came from ebay" isnt that bad of a start for someone who wants to piece together a complete turbo kit...
OP, if you're in no rush you can slowly piece together a reliable kit just by doing a lil reasearch and buying what you like and what you can afford... Some people neglect the fact that not all of us have a money tree in the backyard, and unfortunetly can't afford all the higher end parts like some of us are fortunate enough to get... So like I said, just do a lil reading through the Forced Induction forum, and you'll be fine when it comes time to boost... You'll learn what injectors you can use, intercooler, piping, blow off valve, ect... I got lucky and got a Blitz SSQ BOV, JRC Intercooler, and all the piping and clamps off ebay from some dude in cali for 100 bucks... "80 bucks plus 20 for shipping", and it was all in fairly new condition when it got here, so yeah all the stuff I bought off ebay, i'm definitely a satisfied customer... GL...

why does everyone talk **** on ebay stuff??
my friends del sol turbo dohc zc only street tuned no wideband has been alive for 2 years so far, has had a ebay ss autocrap manifold for a year ebay external 38mm wastegate for 7 months, ebay front mount, ebay piping, ebay greddy type s bov, ebay t3 4 .57 ...
the turbo has been on for 10 months, front mount, piping and bov have been on for 2 years.. and yet his car still hasnt blown up, we even sprayed nitrous at the track 1/8 mile without a [freak]ing jet against a cobra mustang with mods and beat the mustang, and i do have a vid of it..
but still everyone talks **** on ebay stuff, we spent a total of 1500 on his whole turbo setup, including his motor, the ecu, chipping kit, spark plugs.. and the car has been fine for 2 years...
if you build it right it should last a while, if you just throw it together it wont last as long

Exactly what im sayin... The only ONE thing i didnt get from Ebay was my chip kit, "http://www.xenocron.com" which I got from there... I didn't have to get an engine, but for everything required to boost 10psi safely, I got it off ebay and still spent under $750 bucks... Somewhere along the way, a couple people here and there im sure got dicked over, so they decided to just **** on ebays name but its w/e, I know i've never got dealt with like that...

ebay turbos are garbage. plain and simple fact.
they're made with sub-par engineering, sub-par materials, and shitty workmanship.
Ebay non-cast manifolds use shitty thin materials and poor welds. Half the time, chinese "stainless" steel can vary in quality from bathroom-fixture quality to 400 in the same length of pipe!
In this hobby, as in all others: "You get what you pay for". You pay ****, you get ****.
Turbo kits never were cheap, regardless of how much power you want. Turbo cars aren't cheap. Why? Extra engineering to make 'em safe for the peons on the street who have no idea what the cars can really do.
You can piece together a GOOD quality turbo kit for about $1500-2k if you do your research and know what you need to get.
Otherwise, drop the cash on the ebay kit and run some shitty garbage until something blows.

a lot of the kits i've seen on there are about 1,100 + 100 shipping. I don't think that's very cheap. There are also "name brand" kits for sale on ebay as well.

^^^ I disagree 100%
you're referring to SS AutoChrome I believe, which isn't the only person who sells **** on ebay you know... There are plenty of reputable dealers on ebay who offer turbo accessories, and turbos/manifolds as well... My manifold was cast, my turbo after 10 months still had no shaft play whatsoever, and not once in 10 months did i ever have 1 issue with anything related to my turbo setup... Maybe you're just buyin used garbage or getting tuned "or not tuned" and blowin it up based on the tuners performance, think of that..?? Heres some pics of my setup, cuz it wasnt just some junk piece of **** like you're referring to...

and last, i didnt use this downpipe as its picture, i hacked it and shortened in to make it work with a/c and used a smaller flex piece, that was 3" i used 2 3/4"

I wouldn't be surprised if you started getting creep issues at higher rpm due to the placement of the wastegate on that manifold.
It's a decent manifold, being that it's cracked, but I would make a 1" spacer for the wg to sit it further from the manifold to allow better control, as creep is an issue with that style.
As for the turbo, any turbo with "turbocharger" written on it as the brand is a chinese made pile. You may not have problems now or next week, but you will have problems. Just hope it doesn't mean blowing your engine too.

well actually man, im sorry to disappoint you but my car was runnin super hard and super perfect with 0 issues the whole time it was boosted... unfortunetly, my car like i said was just stolen last week and everything completely gutted so now i have no turbo issues to worry about "although sadly i wish i did and had my car instead of not havin my car"..
and just cuz it says Turbocharger on it, doesn't mean its a chinese piece of ****.. it means its a manufactured item most likely by the assload, and to make it as simple as possible for sales, TURBOCHARGER is engraved into almost all second hand turbos... Trust me, I know about 10 people personally running similar setups as mine with zero issues, mainly my neighbors b20/vtec that's been boosted on an ebay kit for about 2-3 years now... Only thing he did was swapped manifold to a cast instead of ramhorn'd....

piece up a turbo off ebay and you will still not spend that much. Just get Turbonetics turbocharger they run at about 300-400 and a good wastegate. the rest can possibly be ebay non brand. (MY OPINION) at least this is what i plan on doing to mine later in the future.

x2, thats what i was trying to do i just got to impatient and figured if the turbo blew "since EVERYONEEEEEEE said it was gonna" i'd just buy another one... well mine not only never blew, it never even had a chance to gimme any problems...
