3rd gear grind
i have a 92 hatch wit a gsr motor and tranny,,,, everytime i try to rev out before i grab third it grinds going in,, but only going in at high rpms,,,,,, it never grinds any other time,,, no other gears grind,,, i changed my tranny fluid but it still does it when i rev out,,, what do u guys think
hi should be the "syncronizer"
This thing "brakes" the gear and allow the gear inserting.
i'm not sure for the tecnical name of it but i'm quite sure about the problem and if this thing is used it must be changed with a new one.
The problem you're speaking about iits tipical at high rpm when a bad syncronizer can't stops quickly the gear and grinds when you put in.
i hope to been clear

Replace the syncros. I had the 3rd gear grind going on w/ my GSR tranny.
Purchased a complete set of carbon coated syncros. Installed them. Problem solved.

I think you should TRY synchromesh, but i highly doubt it will fix it.
If you can get a tranny for a good price, do it and just swap it all together. But you might also want to look into getting a rebuild, as it may be at a better price. Replace the third gear synchro and you should be good to go, but you might not be able to get a 3rd gear without getting a whole tranny. Plus, your other gears may be ready to go out sometime in the future, so a new tranny might be best. But try to get a 3rd gear synchro, as it will be cheaper than a whole new tranny. Keep in mind tho, you'd be dropping a tranny just to change a synchro, so maybe just replace the whole tranny...

Sorry about jumping in, but I have very similar problems with 3rd and 4th....sounds like I need to find some syncros and get to swappin'......I've also heard that on the em1, ek, whatever the heck you call them (US 99-00) civics that 3rd and 4th are linked? Can anyone confirm?
Also, since I'm getting in on this post. I recommend you do the 3rd sychro swap......just make sure you look for any other problems while you have the tranny out.
