Default Visor questions

Lately I've been riding to my night classes and since I usually wear a dark smoke visor, I have to swap to my clear at night. My bike, for a sport tourer (FZ6) has a ridiculously small trunk and I can't fit a visor in there. This means its more I have to stuff in my backpack. I wear glasses, so just wearing sunglasses won't cut it and I prefer to ride with the visor down (part of my trip is on the freeway). I was thinking of a few options.

1. Swap to an orange shield, I know from skiing that they work okay, if its sunny or bright, but if the light is flat, it can be hard to see anything. I've also heard orange doesn't let you see fluid spills as well. I'm not sure about ones tinted blue, yellow, etc. I'm also not sure about the light smoke. This is my least preferred option, as new Shoei visors run about $40.

2. Get a tearoff post kit (about $5) and run some silver tearoffs. There are several problems with this. I heard drilling a shield is just a good way to break it, anybody tried it? I've seen silver tearoffs for mx goggles, but not for shields, only clear ones. I could have sworn I've seen pictures of pros running them though. There's always the problem of tearoffs being "lame" on the street, but I could care less about being cool, and some days it seems like my shield is a killing field for bugs. This way I could just pull tearoff at night and it would be waay cheaper.

3. I could keep on swapping, but I hate dragging around more than I need.

Any advice or opinions would be great

They have a visor holder (think neoprene sleeve) that you can sling around your neck under your arm (like a purse). That works well in your situation.

Or...

Just wear the damn clear shield all the time.

Well I have the same issue with the regular glasses. I just wear my contacts if I want and wear sunglasses under my clear shield. With regular glasses the sun doesn't bother me unless its directly in my face.

As far as tear offs go, you can drill into the shield just make sure you know what you are doing as far as lining it up. If you put the ***** too close then the tear offs will fall off, to far away they won't work, but it doesn't make your visor crack. Its hard plastic or something like that not glass. I drive dirt track race cars and we use tear offs, I've always done my own and never had an issue other then the ***** being off a little but they do have some adjustment by the way they screw in.

I use a dark tinted visor, makes daytime riding much more enjoyable. Dusk/night is bad news, but since I actually have a trunk on my new ride I keep my clear visor in there. It only takes about 30second to swap visors once you do it a few times...

my HJC fs-10 has a sunglass thingy built into it. just push a button and they go down, another button to pop it up. works pretty well. not sure if it would work with glasses though

Hey don't knock the visor caddy, it's super helpful. Yea it's one more thing to carry around, but isn't an extra visor too?

My old roommate got it for me in exchange for helping him sell some gear and I ended up using it constantly. I have no idea it's under my jacket, and it makes it so I don't have to carry a backpack. That, and I wouldn't trust my visor in a backpack.

I can't seem to find the manufacturer or remember where my roommate got it, but I love mine.

Yeah I'd try to get one at cycle gear. However it gives me that "man purse" vibe and I usually take my jacket off in class. I can swap shields fast, so I'll keep doing that.

I don't remember which brand it was, but I remember seeing a jacket once that had a visor pocket in the back (so the visor would curve around your side).

[edit] - or be cheap like these guys:

Also, it looks like the Joe Rocket Ballistic 7.0 jacket has one of those pockets, but I can't find a good picture of it.

A photochromic shield is exactly what you need...I also wear glasses and wish Arai would come out with one. So far, the Akuma is the only helmet maker I know that has these.

Ahh, the old ghetto tint. I may give that a try.

Yeah that would be nice, maybe they'll get popular and Shoei will come out with a shield like it.

retractable I think it's the cl-15 just got one, no need to carry sun glasses now.

slm,
They sell it on this website http://www.FastTracksUSA.com, I just bought one recently, it's good quality and comes with a cool pocket for my wallet. I ride with clear at night and switch to tint for daytime riding also.

I wear the dark smoke/black on my suomy and carry a pair of clear glasses in my cowel. I don't ride at night, but on the special occasion I can just flip the visor up and throw the glasses on. I hate sumoy's design for taking it off, so I just resorted to a $9 pair of glasses.

Seems like this thread won't die, I've just been riding with the clear mostly, and since I won't be taking night classes, just one class during the day this summer it'll be back to the dark.
