idles fine but rpm dead orange one this.n idle?

idles fine but rpm gauge dead at idle
my rpm gauge is playing up on my obd0 B20 vtec crx.
it idles fine. but at idle (under 1000rpm) the gauge sits right at the bottom (showing at most 200 rpm) then drops dead and will not respond until the throttle is pushed and the revs increase.
it shows the rpm's fine whilst driving and when revved at standstill, but as soon as its stopped the gauge dies :?
any ideas?

Unfortunately, yes. I think the pick-up may be going bad.

update for this.
turns out i had dry solder joints all over the rpm gauge board. re-soldered them all and it works fine again.
