LS transmission suggestions.
Would you guys recommend me looking for a b16 tranny to pair up with the LS I'm going to be picking up in the near future, or would it be better to just use the actual LS tranny?
The reason I ask is because I'm sure you all know the LS tranny has really long gears, and the b16 has shorter gears. But then I've also heard that LS motors make most of their power in mid-rpms, so if I had shorter gears it really wouldn't matter all that much.
Anyways, shoot over some suggetsions.

i have an ls in my hatch with an ls tranny, i does pull harder than hell with all the **** i have on my motor but everyone tells me that with a b16 tranny there is no comparison, but also if u plan on boosting keep the ls tranny

No plans for boost in the future. I live in CA so it would be a waste for me to even think about it considering I'd basically throw out all chances of me being able to DD car unless I bought a Greddy/Edelbrock turbo kit, which are way too expensive for an extra 75hp.
Thanks for the response.

So you're giving advice about something you have no first hand experience with, or let alone any real reason?
The shorter geared car will be the faster car, in almost every situation. If anyone tries to tell you that longer gears are better for boost because you "stay in boost longer" give them a swift kick in the nuts.

but if there is a choice like in my situation
Im about to go Lsv with a gsr head. And still have stock ls trans. Should i track a gsr, type r or b16 trans.
Budget is about 900 for a transmission. But i also dont want to be at 5000 rpms at 80mph.
I dont know my trannies so which one has a good final drive?

I would get either the B16 or R transmission and swap in an LS 5th gear if you're worried about cruising RPM

Gonna have to disagree with some of your statement
The LS transmission is GEARED for the B18B powerband, Do you think you know better than Honda?
The argument that the B16 transmission is 'faster' in NA trim on a B18 is that you basically stay in higher RPM where peak power is generated longer, so yes, in NA trim, it will be a spec faster.
The argument on the boost side is that you have to shift more often while accelerating, which means you are out of boost longer with a B16 transmission. The B18B motors make plenty of useable power as low as 3500RPM while B16's do not, so when you are shifting a boosted B18 at redline, you are missing almost 1000-1500RPM of useable power because the B16 trans is geared so narrow.
ALSO a B16 transmission with almost any kind of turbo will be spooling on the freeway, and that will destroy your fuel economy hard-core. Lastly, due to how narrow it is, it becomes VERY challenging to launch a fairly torquey motor *especially if you are boosted* with gears that narrow without melting them.
Also, for reference, the B18 transmission is narrower than any SOHC Transmission *Including EX/SI Trannys* so take people saying that LS transmissions are 'much wider' with a grain of salt, because they are still plenty narrow. Infact, Much of the time I start in second gear in my LS swapped hatch because first gear is so short that I often spin/hop from a standstill without meaning to with P205 width tires.

swapping the 5th gear out of a B16 trans only helps a tiny bit, the final drive is the largest difference between the B16 and LS transmissions not the actual 1-5th gears.
Do a spec of reading and you will see what I mean.

yeah i do know what you mean, but like if you have a stock ls tranny with a long FD ratio it would be all good
, cuz your juss making the first few gears shorter for acceleration and leave the 5th gear stock for the freeway!! so you dont need to make it short and it saves you gas!!

You don't build boost on the highway when you're engine is at part throttle and barely any load.
As far as boost is concerned, If you're shoving air down an engines throat in a FWD car, you're going to have traction problems either way.

But is the LS transmission geared for a turbocharged B18 powerband? I'm thinking no.
And seriously, "missing out" on a 1000 rpm of usable power is pretty negligible if you're making 275+ horsepower from a boosted B.

I understand under minimal load you won't be boosting, but you are spooling the turbo from your RPM's if nothing else which does effect your economy. and again, the narrower gears of the B16 trans will hurt more than the turbo anyways.

in a DD environment I'd rather have the LS tranny, boosting or not. If I was trying to make a ***** to the wall racer that is useable on the street, I'd buy a GSR or ITR trans since they have superior internals, and are geared VERY VERY well, but I'm not made of money personally and I don't know what the OP can afford.

I agree that the LS transmission isn't geared for turbo, and infact having the weakest internals of all B-series transmissions its in fact a poor choice, but due to cost often its the only choice.
I don't think 1000RPM is 'negligible' at all, maybe for a B16? When the motor has 2500-3000RPM of useable power and peaks fairly low in it like the B18B, thats quite alot IMO.
My bottom line to the OP:
If you are staying naturally aspirated, and are on a budget, just pickup an LS transmission, you will enjoy it and they are typically 1/2 to 1/3rd the cost of a B16 trans. If you plan on boosting it down the road, and its a DD car, save your money and pickup a GSR or ITR transmission.

Remember, if the hypothetical engine we're talking about here is a boosted B18, even with the stock cams, there is forced induction involved. The engine will have a wider powerband, it won't run out of breath in the top end as bad as it would N/A.

Alright guys, thanks for the input.
Right now, I think I'm probably just going to go for the LS tranny. In the end, it's going to save me money and since I'm not really planning on boosting or anything it in the future, it'll suit me well.

ok so im about to go lsv within the month.
I see that the anything other than the stock Ls tranny is good in my situation but iam wanting to take this thing 200+ miles on the interstate so the last gear would get on my nerves.
What are the 75-85 cruising rpms for a the short geared trans?
So should i go a stock lsd short geared or something hybrid

I have a B18b with the LS tranny in mine... when im just going down the road at 70mph i sit at about 3100rpm. and im not even going to get into this other argument over which is better for which... i love my LS tranny but 3/4 of the time i will get beat off the line and though second gear by a GSR tranny. its all in where you want your power i'll catch up to them at the end of my 2nd gear when they have already shifted into third (second and third in LS are [freak]ing long gears)....
but in the end that GSR driver is probably getting 2-5mpg less then i am so i laugh in the end :D
