Progress of my YZF600 project
I know a lot of you guys enjoy working on and building older bikes. This YZF is my first bike and I used it as a commuter for a couple of years until it lost 2nd gear. At that point, I pulled the engine and performed a complete rebuild. Not being able to leave **** alone, I ended up rebuilding the entire bike. Here's what I posted on a YZF forum:
I finished building the engine complete with the Falicon adjustable cam gears and a Factory Pro ignition advance kit. The engine's been reinstalled into the frame. I've been busy painting and finishing it up. Here's a teaser of how the bike looks now:
I fixed all the dents in the tank which took a total of 12 hours worth of work. This is my first attempt at bodywork and I learned a lot. The tank is painted with 2 coats of Duplicolor primer, 1 coat Duplicolor primer sealer, 3 coats of Duplicolor "gloss" white. I have not color sanded the tank as I am not pleased with the rattle can paint at all.

The last things I need to do are:
= Finish prepping the front fairing and then I'll be able to paint the whole thing. I got frustrated with the cheap quality of paints that come out of the spray cans so I bought a couple of HVLP paint guns and some real polyurethane paint and clear. I can't wait to try this stuff out!
= I don't know if you all noticed but there's a 2005 R6 radiator under the fairing. This unit is larger than the stock one and its curved. The only problem is that I need to make some pipes for the radiator hoses. I'm mocking that up now.
= Install the new Hella 90mm head lights which will require a custom bracket.
= Build a custom bracket for the Aprilia tail light/signals/license plate
= Build a custom mid-pipe from the header to a spare Moriwaki muffler.
Once all that stuff is sorted out, I'll pull the engine out again and powder coat the frame.
:cheers

you know something man, the more I look at that bike the more I thik it would look great if you "kinda" streetfighter'ed it out. Since you already have a full fairing bike, why not have another one that is more of an in town thrasher/slasher with some pep?
Jus my input. I know you like the nestalgia of it being your first bike, but why not go in a alternate route with it and give the old a new edge?

that chassis would NEED a bikini fairing to look good as a SF. But it could be done rather easily and it could look VERY good. The radiator and top/front of the engine needs to be disguised a bit tho. They are not very pleasing to the eye.

The paint that comes out of the rattle cans is really thin and doesn't take much for it to scratch. On the RC51's tail section, I sprayed 3 coats of paint and then wet sanded with 1000 and 1500. By the time I got it smooth, I could see the primer below the paint! All the time spent prepping and finishing was wasted by inferior materials.
