Default Check engine light. HELP!

Today while I was driving all of a sudden my check engine light came on. I asked a friend who is a mechanic and he said that it could be that a gas attendant left the gas cap loose when it is supposed to be tightened. I went and checked and it was loose and not secured at all. I dont think there is anything wrong with the engine itself because it drives just fine and there is nothing different from before. I just wanted to know if there was anyway I can get the check engine light off. I dont really want to bring it into a shop. My friend said they might have to reset it or something.
