Default s2k stock intake box questions

My buddy just picked up a 01 s2k and the first thing he did was take off the intake box cover so just the filter is exposed, he did this so the car would "sound better" Is this hurting performance any since its not getting ram air any more just hot air from the engine bay.

Yep. Someone on another forum had one of the best comments about this intake issue:

In terms of performance:
-2.....Removing top of intake cover
-1.....The "bling blang" ARC intake system
0......Stock airbox
+1.....Any other aftermarket solution

has anyone ever tried an air funnel or something like that? where it would redirect flow to the intake? kinda like the ARC box but without heatsoak ?

There are multiple companies out there (replicas and the real deal) that have snorkel type intakes or Cold Air Intakes that do the exact thing you're describing.

Search for "snorkel". Is that what you're looking for? They're apparently pretty functional, although most of the genuine ones require you to cut/notch the bottom of your hood.

I'm the guy that did the "airbox mod". I will admit I got no performance out of taking off the top. The airbox quites down the motor a little bit, hence the chambers in the box. By removing the top, the motor sounds deeper at 50%+ throttle. Bolt-ons are pointless on this car. A couple hundred for a few HP isn't worth it to me. This will give it a tight sound while I save for a turbo. But performance wasn't gained or lost. Stickers are another story... I've got one that says MIVEC and I think thats worth 20hp!! lol

Still waiting for a dyno that proves the ARC loses power, versus just theories.

it depends on what mods you get for bolt ons... yes there are some exhausts that will net you ~12 whp... thats a decent gain... ill tell you what im running when i dyno my car this summer...

It doesn't loose power initially, and it probably won't show up on a normal dyno day run 1-3 quick runs. However, the intake setup itself causes heat soak, which in turn leads to loss of power in the long run.

You're kidding, right?

You realize that the ARC does make power...until heat soak becomes a factor...which is almost immediately when driving anywhere outside. Dyno's are taken in ideal conditions, and most Dyno's I have seen with an ARC intake have the hood popped open to prevent heat soak. The heat soak on those are awful. That is the truth whether you want to believe it or not.

No one can argue with a dyno! "Just for kicks, we decided to see what kind of power the Honda would make if we removed the cover for the filter, exposing the Comptech foam filter. By opening up the orifice more than what the factory airbox can provide, we figured we'd be able to increase the engine's air intake. With the exhaust and the filter opened up, the engine produced 205.9 hp (vs 203.2) and 137.9 lb-ft of torque."

We'll obviously you make more power...there is more airflow, but those dyno numbers mean nothing if your not able to achieve the same results while driving. Which you're not. This is why there are Drag cars, and there are Dyno Queens. You can't run an open box while driving. There is a substancial amount of heatsoak. This is why the ARC intake fails.
