spare key, where to buy? chip or no chip?
I have a 99' accord LX 2.3L L4
i am trying to get a spare key for the car. Do these keys have some sort of chip that i can only get through honda, or can i just buy one at any hardware store?
i want it to unlock the car, and also turn the car on!
thanks

Yes, there's a chip in it and you'll need to go through a dealer. You'll need one working key (they clone the chip) and your registration (for the VIN plus proof of ownership). They use the VIN to get the cut for the key - at least at my local dealer they create a truly new key and don't just copy the old key which may be worn down a bit.
Cost: The cost varies quit a bit from dealer to dealer, call any that you are reasonably close to or who might be in a town you may visit at some point. My local dealer charges a flat $25 per key (I also have a '99) which includes the blank and labor. Another dealership about twenty miles away wanted $40, and a third (close to my mom's house) wanted $85 - anyway, my point here is that prices do vary for spare keys and this is definately one area where you can price shop from dealer to dealer. And ask how much the cost would be for two keys, sometimes labor will be "free" on the second one.
