Passenger airbag off

Can one turn the passenger side airbag off? Or is there a sensor in the seat? If so, which model year did they start having it?

I want to say it was 05 that started the sensor in the seat that automatically turned the airbag on or off. It takes xxlbs of weight in order to activate it otherwise the airbag stays off.
