Have a dinged up set of junk forged pistons I bought cheap from someone tapping them due to use in an LS/vtec with a big set of cams. I can't find anyone to do this locally, and I need it done somewhat quickly to make an event.

The pistons are 81.5mm and if you could pm me a quote for this work I'd appreciate it.

I wouldn't expect he'd need in-head cutting done as I'd assume the pistons already have reliefs. All that would be needed would be to cut 1mm around and maybe a little deeper, assuming he knows how much more lift he'll use over stock.

 

Thanks for all the responses. I'm just going with a set of GSR or TypeR cams over B16's.

I'll contact some of the suggestions here and see what I can come up with. Thank you all.

 

i "machined" my own valve reliefs on my LS pistons, you should be able to do it too, i know you got tools!! i just used a freakin grinder and masked off all other parts of my engine to make sure no shavings got anywhere, it took some time and patience but it worked great, also mine were cast pistons, im not sure if that makes it easier.

LOL....I guess I never considered that...haha. These are cheap forged units, so they aren't that important. Hmmm...now you got me thinking here...why'd you do that?

If I do that I'd certainly have to cc the work to be sure I don't create static compression differences from cyl to cyl. I have the stuff to do it, i just honestly never even remotely considered doing it by hand.

Guess it depends on how much the job costs sending them out...hahaha.

Called them, they acted like I was from outer space....said they only do connecting rods and not pistons

DaveF....I'm waiting on a call back from your referral. They may have the same problem my local guy has, in that they don't have fixtures that can hold that small of a piston. Guess we'll see here.

i did it cause i had just rebuilt a b16a shortblock with LS pistons, the motor smoked so i pulled the head off for a 3 angle valve job and new guide seals, when i did that i saw that the valves were hitting the intake side of the pistons (b16b head with ctr pistons .050 headgasket for those who care). i was not about to take the damn pistons out after just having the damn thing assembled soooo... push came to shove and we did it by hand.

my compression is so low if i do have any cyl to cyl differences its probably .1, im currently 8.3:1 so i think im pretty damn safe. it all comes down to time and money, i had the money to do take the pistons out, but man i did not have the time.
