Changed the oil in my '99 civic and the oil had a strong gas smell. Let me know if I miss anything. I plan to check:

1) Spark related equipment (replace cap, rotor, wires, plugs)
2) Thermostat
3) Leaky exhaust manifold (this causes more O2 to pass by the O2 sensor so the engine runs rich).

 

The PCV should help out this problem as well. Check to make sure its not clogged

 

how many miles are on the motor? and have you done a compression and leakdown test?

 

It's got about 100,000 miles on it. I just changed the PCV valve. The previous owners never changed it. The wires still have '1999' on them (i.e. never changed), so I'm changing out all of the spark related stuff too. I haven't done a compression test. I also plan to put some injector cleaner in the tank since I might also have sticky injectors.

 

i would do all that is named above and it should solve your problem, prolly just old parts and you need it updated. Plus gives you a reason to buy better ****!

 

Update:
Well, I changed all spark related equipment (plugs, wires, rotor) and PCV valve and the oil smells like oil!

 

You may still just check the compression test just to be on the safe side and for your own piece of mind
