I recently bought an EK hatch and the headliner in it was kinda nasty looking. I have seen some posts on here about painting the floor carpet with a fabric and vinyl paint made by Dupli-color. I figured that since the headliner would hardly ever get touch, this paint should do the trick. Plus it was only like $10 for a couple of cans so if it didn't work all that well I would not be out much money. Here are some before and after pics.

I took it out. It was not too bad of a job. I already had most of my interior out anyway, so I decided it was a good time to work on the headliner.

 

I would try this, but the paint won't cover the small tears that came with the car. maybe if i had a new headliner...none the less, it looks really good

Did the dye make the fabric rough feeling?

 

yea mine was sagging when i bought my old civic so i re-covered it. u just peel of the top layer then brushed off the foam under it. then go to an arts a crafts store and buy your choice of fabric and a can of adhesive glue

Yes, but nothing major. Since I hardly ever touch it, it's not a big deal to me. Besides, it's not like it feels like sandpaper or anything. lol For a quick and cheap fix, it works perfect! Some people have used it on the floor carpet too, but I would not recommend it.

 

I figured as much. But I've also heard claims of dye not drying and stiffening up the fabric. I call b.s. But like you said, headliners don't get touched really, so it shouldn't be a problem.

do you have pics of the headliner in the caR?

 

No, not yet. I have the other pieces out to paint them. Ran out of paint, and one of them was geting fish eyes. So it won't be back in until they're painted.

Not sure if you're asking me or the original poster. But if you're asking me, I had it knocked out in about an hour. That includes all trimming and tucking of the edges. I also do it in sections to make sure that there are no bubbles or ripples that get looked over.

I've also done other headliners and even covered a, b and c pillars before.

Here's a shot of my roommate/ex's GTI that I did. It doesn't have the oh **** handles, map lights or sunroof controls i yet since this was when I just mocked everything up. The bulge by the oh **** handle is the wiring connector for the map light. The headliner is suede and the pillar covers are silk.

Oh, and the grey stip is part of the weather stripping. A new set runs over $600 so she's settling with the grey for a bit.

Well here is some pics of my headliner I did, Im pretty happy with the way it came out. its a hit or miss thing some people like it and others hate it. But the ones that hate it usually change there mind when I pop the hood and show them the built motor.

That's a pretty neat headliner. First two pictures it looks like roses or something, I was just thinking I hope it's a chick's car, but geishas are the ****!

sorry but i can't help but think of those old conversion vans with the airsprayed wizards on the sides.....haha
