Default Hankook Z214

Anyone use these tires. I'm currently using Hoosier A6 for autox but notice that Z214 were cheaper.

they probably grip less and heat more than hoosier, but they're great.

i've seen them on many race car around here (official race tire last year of Touring) and the average feedback was that they were alright.

i've seen them on a race car testing as of yesterday, they did a great job.

they don't have any particular flaw except that they take a severe beating if unshaved and new.

The A6 has a much stiffer sidewall than the kooks which may make them feel less responsive. Grip wise, they're on par with the kumho v710's and not quite up there with the A6. Similar wear life as the kumho's which is better than the A6 which makes it a good value. hankook also has some good contingency if you're competitive in scca nationals or prosolo.

I ran the C70 compound last year in autocross.

Note that the Z214 is available in three compounds: hard, medium, and soft (as shown on the Frisby website), so any comments should indicate which compound was used (like bsclywilly did). I assume the soft compound (C70/C71) is best for autocross.

from word of mouth..

the c71 compound is very sticky... comparable to a6s somewhat... i hear more grip than a v710 , but slightly less with an a6.. but with the durability of a v710

but i have yet to find anyone locally that is doing well on them and the ones who do are on the c70 compound

Also, let me add that the hoosiers are quite a bit lighter than the hankooks (almost 3 lbs diff for a 225-45-13). The heavier tire makes for a bit better management of braking threshold (it is noticable) at the expense of extra rotating and sprung mass (not noticable, by my butt, at least).

I do recall a hankook rep mentioning to me that there were plans to remove one of the circumferential belts in the 214 to save weight but not sure what became of that. It doesn't appear they post mass data on their website. http://www.hankooktireusa.com/...d=751

Road racer here...

The Hankook Z214 is a fine tire, but it's no Hoosier. I used 5 sets last year of Hankooks last year in all the compounds... c51's, c30's and c70's.

This year I'm back with Hoosier.

You know why everyone compares themselves to Hoosier? Because the Hoosier A6/ R6 is still the best tire on the market. I drove 600+ race miles last year on Hankooks and after my first session on Hoosier this year, I realized how much better the Hoosiers are. I'll never go back.

Both tires will work for ya, but the Hoosiers are worth a few extra bucks.

JMO.
