Lots of smoke, D15B2
91 Civic hatch, manual, D15B2, euro spec.
I have tons of smoke on downshifts (where accelerator isn't being pressed), some smoke just cruising the autobahn. Burns oil pretty fiercely. Car backfires from time to time, only on downshift though w/ moderate/high rpms (I have a downhill road to my house, I downshift to 2nd and just let the car slow down that way)
Also- burns TONS of gas. I estimate I'm only getting around 13-14 mpg. Other than smoke & random backfires, car runs really strong. Pulls hard (as hard as a D15 can I suppose.)
I got the beater just to get to and from work. Changed oil & filter, plugs, nothing else.
Any ideas? I've yet to break into the engine. I've heard valve seals/rings, but would that cause the horrible gas mileage?
Last question, if doing a ring job, do I need head gasket seals up, or just the lower set?

try not down shifting and just applying breaks. that would help the life of your engine.. sounds like you have some bad internal problems.. burnt rings something like that.. check the timing, and quit down shifting use brake and push clutch in. lol.
the way you drive could cause bad gas mileage plus something internal. like bad rings or something.. **** bad spark plugs and wires could cause bad gas mileage just have to look at it.. the car was built to do one thing and if it's not the way they built it then the gas mileage would be crap.. know what i mean?
he means he hasnt looked under the valve cover yet. but ****.. check the water in the radiator if it has some oil looking water then more then likely it's a bad head gasket, check under the valve cover to see what it looks like.

I appreciate all the ideas. I'm deployed for a few more days... I was just kind of looking at getting thoughts together to maybe order parts so they'd be there when I got home. I'll give it a look and see what comes of it. I'll post pics and anything I discover.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Definitely not Crisco unless someone ran out of 10w-30 and decided to use that instead.

Yeah, I plan to do a head gasket, timing belt and water pump etc.
Unfortunately I am stuck at the crank pulley bolt and want to do it all at one time.

on mine i only changed the head gasket and reused the head bolts and got the head milled and its running stronger than before. Its better if you have those guys that u connect to the compressor...if not your gonna have a hard time taking it off.
CLEARLY that is water in the oil. It's the classic "milkshake for oil" syndrome. Your headgasket most likely.
Faulty rings and/or valve seals alone will not make your mileage 13-14 MPG. But if the head gasket is compromised, the engine will "struggle" to perform, ergo: bad mileage. The oil probably smells like gas too(?).
You'd have to be driving like some crazed NASCAR wannabe meth head to be getting 13-14 MPG with a D15.

yes i had a bit not a whole lot like the picture above. I guess they let it get worst. My car is running good now no smoke or nothing . except the CEL codes and the stuttering i haves...

Is there a way to remove email notification from this topic? It was hijacked when another user posted his busted engine's picture and now I'm getting emails from everyone telling him about his milkshake problem.
Thanks for the help from the nOOb.
