fresh build. no oil pressure
ok i just finished putting together my b18 and am cranking with no ecu plugged in to prime the oil pump. Getting no pressure. cranked 4 times at 10 second intervals. using a autometer mechanical pressure guage. what is the recommended procedure for priming the pump.
heres the facts.
no oil pressure.
not getting any oil into the line to the pressure guage.
very small amounts of oil are present in the cylinder head when i take off the oil cap. ( i had everything cleaned with mineral spirits beforehand)
oil restrictor in block is there
clearances are in spec everything is torqued to spec
oil pickup is clean and brand new
brand new pickup gasket
yes i put oil in lol.
oil pump is from a gsr with low miles.
i hope im just not following the procedure properly....someone chime in please

errrm....no....wasnt aware it needed to be primed out of the car? how would you go about doing that?
its too late to do it now anyways though.

are you sure that everything is hooked up correctly? if it is, i would say to prime it. even though i never had to do that when ever i had to start up a freshly built motor
I say start it too..... I've never primed it or waited for pressure to build, i always leave the valve cover off and dump a quart up there too though. Anyways, cranking it over 20 times in intervals will do its damage too.
My post was deleted by someone who's admin happy.. Dont listen to the kid who stated start your motor and let it run if u dont have oil pressure in 5 seconds you got a problem..
I'm sorry i thought i'd point out this kid is a moron for telling him to do so.. i didn't know i could do that.. thx.

Hell no , you wanna have this same dude in a week post up a thread " No oil pressure, bearsing are shot, crank is scored up" because he listen to some assclown..
If your not getting pressure when priming your oil via cranking over.. Then something is wrong, excessively cranking your over will not help the situation.

Letting it run 5 secs with no oil pressure can ruin the bearings and the crank.

You will do more damage cranking a motor for five minutes trying to build pressure. I'm not a kid and I've built motors for a living in the past. If you assemble the motor correctly and used a good assembly lube you are better off just starting it up. On every build I've done this way oil presser was there instantly.

Its pretty damn obviously the op does NOT know what he's doing, therefore , just telling him to crank over his newly built motor w/o priming it is..
a) stupid.. as ****.

so your basically same bumping will damamge as much as starting it right?
you must have some knocky first start motors if you never build pressure or prime them. and also dumping a qt in it ain gonna give the bearings lubrication

errrm...ok to everyone who says im an idiot or whatever u can all go [freak] urselves and post in a different forum where they think ur cool, cuz no one here does.
anyways....so i cranked it again today and after about 15 seconds of cranking i got pressure. so its good to go...just weird that it took so long to get pressure. took abbout a total of 90 seconds of cranking on and off at 10-15 second intervals to get pressure. still havnt started it but presure builds nicely now while cranking and no leaks.

No, i use assembly lube. Which takes place of the oil for that time.
I also never said that priming the motor over will cause damage. If you spend a minute of turning over the motor, even if it's not running you could still be wearing off the assembly lube and causing damage. I personaly, start mine up, and watch the oil pressure. Never had an issue, pressure always builds pretty much instantly. I have read plenty of threads on here about people saying they can't get oil pressure to build by just cranking it for long periods of time.

pull the ecu fuse, unhook the turbo drain, turn over 5 or so times wait for oil to seep, plug it back up and start the car.
works every time
