Bought my b20. Need some info.
First up here's some pics. JDM b20b.

From the pictures it looks like I have a shot at getting the high compression version. That is the actual engine I'll be recieving. Price paid, $495, $660 after shipping. So even if it turns out to be a lower compression engine I think I still made out OK.
Now some questions.
1. What's the best stock ecu to run with this? P75? Might take me a bit before I can get it tuned but I'll be needing the car for work as soon as it's swapped.
2. I think the answer is no, but is there any way for me to use my ITR mani and TB? If no on the mani, can I atleast use the TB?.
3. From your experience should I re-pin or hardwire the ecu and dizzy plugs? Or would I be better of just spending the $100 for the conversion harnesses?
4. I'm planning on dumping the noisy as hell b16a injectors and using the b20's. I'm sure I can find the diagrams, but that just entails removing the resistor box, and changing my harness's injector clips correct?
SO, in a nutshell my checklist looks like..
1. Buy proper ecu.
2. Hardware ecu and dizzy plugs, or purchase conversion jumpers.
3. Remove resistor box and hardwire(solder on) new injector clips.
That's it right?
One more thing, should I use my b16a flywheel or the b20's?
Also, LS trans the way to go, or should I do a ls 5th gear swap into my S1?
Many thanks, I'm super pumped just want to be ready when it gets here.

LS tranny is a pooper unless your force fed in some way. As you said though 5th gear is nice for the highway but I'm not sure if it will swap over. ECU depends on weather your stayin OBD0 or going OBD1.
Not much but it's a start. GL

Well here's my prob with just doing 5th gear swap. 4th tachs out at 120mph right now. I don't plan on reving the 20 past 6500rpm, that means my top speed will be about 100mph before I have to shift into 5th which would likely just fall on it's face.
Was hoping the LS might work out ok for the track, as the b20 is more torque than HP. Either way, I'm looking for 3k rpm crusing down the freeway, rather than the 4500 I'm pulling now.
As for the mani, I can't remember how they bolt up. I think it's, LS GSR CRV mani's all bolt up the same. And the b16 and ITR mani's are the odd ducks(pr3 head). Be cool if I could atleast use my TB, but I have no idea there.
Keep the info coming! Will have lots of b4 and after pics!

I'm not really sure which transmissions I've had but I think one was a YS1 from an older integra it topped at 105 with an LS. The transmission I'm running now would top at 120 or so. Both of these I ran with an 6800 redline. I decided to not worry about the gears and up my red line by going LS/Vtec. Haven't been able to check top speed yet though as the car is in paint.
absolutely dump the ls tranny, no question. its not about torque or boost, its about gearing. the LS transmission was for economy and luxury, the S1 is for acceleration. The s1 will out perform the LS in all categories except highway driving. no question
and the manifold will not fit. ITR=b16 GSR=GSR LS=LS. ITR will fit b16 and ITR, gsr willl fot gsr only and ls will fit ls only. TB shold match up though. Never done it on a b20 mani, but it should work. Might wanna port match. good excuse to get a dremel

Cause a b20 motor is such a high performance engine as is. How often are you going to be doing full throttle at redline shifts from 4th to 5th?
Get an LS trans and save on gas.

I just rebuilt an S1 tranny with LS 5th for my B20Z. I like it a lot, really wakes that engine up. Currently rev-limited at 7200rpms, stock engine with ARP rod bolts. Use a B10b intake mani for now until you decide to put a Vtec head on, then use an ITR. Your ITR throttle body will work on any intake manifold. Probably best to run a chipped P28 ECU (OBDI).
Well still on the fence on which trans I want to go with. Another question came to mind. I can use the same LSD for either the LS trans or S1 correct?
The comment about saving gas with the ls is where I'm at. I'll be driving 500-700 miles a week on this thing so gas savings will play a huge part.
However, this engine will see the strip pretty often, so again it looks like I'm still gonna want to keep the S1.
I think I'm just gonna go for the gusto and do the LS 5th conversion. My S1 is still in great shape and I'm always hesitant to pick-up someone elses used headache. So there it is, gonna keep the S1 but toss in an ls 5th.
Now on to my other question, anyone have any feedback on the wiring issues?
Also, been reading some contradictory info. This should just bolt up right in place of my 16 correct? Been reading some info that I might need the LS motor side mount.
Again sorry about all the questions. I've been searching my *** off but I'm just not finding the good solid info I need.
Hoping to get it all swapped and good to go next weekend, but that's only if every duck is lined up in a row.
Thanks,

whatever
everybody in this thread knows why he bought a b20 instead of a d15b2

I have a high comp B20Z in my EK hatch. Its running a hydro LS gearbox, i have no complaints what so ever.....except traction in 1st and 2nd. The car goes like hell and will take a ITR no problem. Its true a vtec tranny is hort geared and will spool up faster, but its not really necesary with a B20. The engine makes so much torque, i wouldn't want to have to further feather the gas just to get traction with a lower geared tranny.
An LS tranny is fine, i speak from actual experience.

Nice deetz thanks.
I probably don't need to keep the s1, but if I can have a track beast and a cruising daily driver I think I'll head that route.
That.. and I've called every junk yard around and can't source a LS trans.. Well I did find one.. But the smucks wanted $450 plus my S1 as a core, HA! Stay away from I-5 auto wrecking.. Biggest ****** around. Honestly don't know why I bothered calling them.. They always have the part you need they just never want to actually sell it to you.
Anyways, I was able to source the 5th gears new, but I'm being told that the countershaft gear is a "revised" gear, with a different part number than the regular countershaft gear, so I'm not sure I want to drop the coin and end up having an exspensive paper weight..

Call gearspeed if your looking to mod the tranny you have now, they'll be able to help you out np.
BTW, i'm running a pr4 ecu. I have a p75 as well, but the pr4 seems to work better.
As for the intake manifold, don't both with the ITR model, for one it won't fit, and two, its not that great anyway. The TB will however work on the manifold your engine now has.

What do you think my chances of that engine being high compression?
Can't see a knock sensor in the pictures, but tit does have the low rise manifold.
I'm crossing my fingers.
Btw, just found out that source for the countergear is incorrect. I can get the main gear but the counter was for "92+

S1 tranny is the small spline style found in 1990-91 itegra tranny's. I mentioned to contact "Gearspeed" because they carry parts for the older small spline gearbox, including jdm Y1, Ys1 and S1 tranny's. They will be able to help, trust me.
High compression model? Best to wait till you actually get the motor, then you can identify the year by the stamping on the head. If its a 1998 ro higher, there's a pretty good chance.
I don't have time right now, but i'll post some links from H-T on B20 identities for you, stay tuned.

I'll give them a call thanks for the heads up.
Also, I will have to wait on the engine to arrive to be sure. It was sold as a 97-01 model year.
From the mani though looks like I have a shot. Not a definite low comp like the "giraffe" mani models.
Looking forward to any info you can send my way.

The low rise manifold on my high compression b20 is different from yours, here's a shot so you know what i mean:

Oh, and mine did come with a knock sensor. They are used because of the higher compression to help adjust timing and stop knock.

Yup you got the Z manifold. Personally I think it looks pimp. Mani I got should be a p75 mani, which from info I've seen gives me a hit and miss chance at high compression.
Btw, nice looking swap.

use the type r tb.. the mani wont bolt up. buy the conversion harness to save headaches. ls fifth gear wont work from what im told. flytwheel doesnt matter.. buy an aftermarket flywheel bc the b 20 revs really slow..
Well I was planning on just using my b16 flywheel. It's supposedly a lightened flywheel, although, I've had it so long I forget what weight it is. Guessing 8-10 lbs or so, no heavier than that.
Other reason for using it is I just replaced the clutch 2 weeks ago, and I don't want to worry about remating the clutch surfaces.
Got my conversion harness on the way, bought it last night. Looking at a couple p75 ecus. One is already chipped for crome. Thinking I'll go with that one and buy a burner and tune it myself. Dynojet wideband and datalogger FTW!
Only thing I'm worried about now is repinning or making a conversion harness for the dizzy, and rewiring and reclipping the injectors to use the b20's.

Rywire looked a bit spendy. I found this harness for about $75 shipped. Looks to be good quality.

Gonna hit up the junkyard this week and find a plug to make my own dizzy harness.
