Default Speedo problem

I'm looking forward into buying a 2000 civic coupe (se model if I remember) and since it needs a safety check something is bothering me.

Whenever you start the car, the speedometer gauge stays at 20 and jumps to 40 from time to time. Today I took it for a ride and after 2 mins of driving it goes back to 0 and works fine.
The owner told me it was doing that for the past 3 months, and that it works normally from time to time.

Since I heard it's a commun problem on EK's I guess some of you guys allready fixed this. Could it be a speed sensor on the tranny or something else?

Thanx!

Oh and keep in mind that the same owner had it for the past 2 years (a friends girllfriend) and the cluster wasn't taken apart or whatsover(no one played with it or rolled back the km's)

i had a similar issue. my speedo just went nuts while driving. it would jump around all the way to 125 then sit at 10 and everything in between. i replaced the speed sensor and it fixed nothing, i ohmed the wire back to the ecu and that was fine. so i figured it was the cluster. i tore it out and everything looked fine.

it ended up being a 15amp fuse for the cruse control not being blown all the way and making random contact.

that **** drove me crazy for like 3 days

This Ek doesn't have the cruise control so it might be some other fuse in that case.

I have to do a safety check on it and without the speedo it's never gona pass, I'll start with the speed sensor and go from there since I need the car ASAP.

Thanks, and if anyone else had this preoblem feel free to give me ideas.

I'm having that speedo problem as well and it just started 2 days ago.

Also, a month ago my cruise control started to act up and wouldn't enable. The cruise light would just blink repeatedly whenever I tried to set a speed. I couldn't figure out the problem, I would try it a few times and it would then just start to work. It's like an electrical gremlin.

I'm going to try changing this cruise control fuse to see if it fixes my speedo as well.

When I start the car, the speedometer gauge stays at 20 and jumps to 40 then after awhile it would go back to normal. Very annoying to say the least.
