Default Overrevved...need help

Was driving today, brought it to redline, missed the 2nd gear and revved it past 9500 RPMS...and i hear this pretty loud thump. Could anybody tell me what could possibly be wrong if anything at all? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Instead of wondering what happened (possible bent valves) take your valve cover off and take a look.. It's a very costly mistake...

Recap: so you were in 1st, went for 2nd, missed and revved the engine while in neutral to 9500RPM (as indicated).

If this is what happened then you shouldn't have damaged anything inside the engine. The fuel cutoff would have stopped the engine from grenading itself.

Check the engine sound at idle. If it sounds normal but the car is now making sounds while you are driving it then perhaps you damaged something in the tranny or clutch.

basically, in terms of the engine...you are looking for a rhythmic sound (repeating tap). No unusual sound = hopefully good to go (although a leakdown would give a better reading).

I didn't think the rev limiter would stop you from over revving while in neutral.

Nothing, the thump you heard was probably due to the revlimiter.
Are you sure it was over 9500 rpms? I dont believe you can go that high in neutral.

Not true.
grab your key, go out and test it.
not sure if vtec engages... but it runs into the limiter.. I had to test this very often right after my oem cams fawked up and I had to swap them.

also reving your engine that high with no load on the engine could cause problems!

First of all, you can not rev to 9500rpm if you are in neutral. The rev limiter stops it from spinning any faster , you're just going to hit the rev limiter and fuel cut. If you just missed second gear from first, it should be too bad. If you were in 3rd gear redline and missed 4th and popped it into 2nd, thats a different story. I personally have experienced this when my cousin drove my car and missed a gear. The rev limiter is there so you won't damage your engine. If you force it over redline then you bend the valves because they can handle 9k rev's but anything faster, your valvetrain would make noises. Listen to the motor. See how it sounds during idle and if its rough, your valves could be bent and your spark plugs could be shot. If there's a CEL ( check engine light ) then there's a real bad problem ( i.e. Misfiring of any given cylinder but if you're in neutral, its all good. Sometimes i am racing on the highway and i hit the rev limiter and its not too bad that it happened. If you just missed second, don't worry about it. Its okay. Its always good to check it out. Look under my name and search for topics that were created by me. I even have pics.

Take it to Acura if the car is still under warranty - its worth a try. You could always just go in for an oil change and then be like do you hear that what'd you guys do! HEHE!

ummm i'm pretty sure there is no rev limiter in neutral. fuel cutoff, yes, but no rev limiter.

Fuel cutoff is the rev limiter. That's the only way honda ecus limit it (as opposed to ignition cut off).
