Default C/F hood--safe?

I have just bought a c/f hood for my ITR, it maybe made in Hong Kong or Taiwan, I have heard a lot of stories that they are breaking, is it safe to use?? or is there any thinkg I can make it harder to break?

i thought the dangerous thing about the carbon fiber hood was that they don't break........instead they push into the cabin and can decapitate the front passengers

I've said this before...

One company was claiming how durable their CF hood was...it showed a picture of a rolled R with the hood having only a few scratches. I think they pulled the pic from someone on here actually...

Anywho, I'm debeating how safe they are now. Part of me says the bolts/hood pins should do it.....

i have a cf hood on my coupe, and when i first bought it and put it on, i was hit up on the freeway. there was a strait-away coming up with no traffic in sight so i said "wtf, why not..." at the end of the strait away and slowing down from +120mph i thought to myself, "damn, i don't have hood pins!" so it goes to show that having a cf hood is safe even without the hood pins, just as long as the hood fits just as nice as the stock hood did... and of course tightly bolted down

Depends what kinda stress the C/F compnent was meant to take. They can take incredible force from one direction. I.e. you could prob jump on it and not break. However front to back It should shatter under high stress load. Watch Formula one or Indy car for an understanding of how CF breaks.....

I've gone over 130 with the CF hood on and no hood-pins.....No problem. However, i took mine off because it attracts the wrong kind of attention. And all the ricers are painting their hoods black for that "carbon fiber look"

I always recomend hood pins with a c/f or any aftermarket hood. Ever seen what happens when a hood flys open on a freeway???? It might not just fly open, but I have seen two different friends cars after there hoods smashed the windshield and damaged the roof. One had a piece of retread hit the front another had a small piece of wood, both hit almost dead center on the front of the hood were the latch is and popped them open. There cheap $25.00 why not use them?

I had mine powdercoated a black/silver speckle to try and hide them. Almost unnoticable at night.

They bend just like a metal hood. TC spoilers hood here. Civic Vs. Jeep cherokee. Civic wins.

I remember that in the 60's and 70's we would paint long hood flat black to keep the glare down.

you remember the 60's?

just playin

No problem. I knew that pic would come in handy one day. The thing that surprised me was the hood was still latched close.

I got into an accident with my CF hood and it did crack a bit, albeit the impact wasn't too severe. The top layer of the hood also peeled away a bit from the fiberglass underskeleton. I think that at a higher collision speed the hood would just crack under stress or peel away from the fiberglass skeleton and slide over the A pillars and roof(In a really severe front end collision that is)

If your buying a carbon fiber hood for looks, then you have serious issues.

Function before looks in my book.

Can any of you post a picture of where you are installing your hood pins on an ITR ?? Obviously, I know where the pins go on the hodd, what I want to see is where you are installing on the chassis (hood open). Thanks !!
