Default Bad Thermostat??

Hey Everyone,

I recently purchased a 1994 Prelude Si with 150k miles. The engine seems to run pretty well, but I noticed that the temperature gauge does not move from the "cold" position (1 bar). I'm new to Preludes, but am used to the usual "middle" position with my prior Hondas (once up to running temp). I've done some research, and it seems like this might be the problem, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this same issue. Thanks for your time.

does the temperature needle move at all? like when u start it, does it rise from below the C line to the C line? i noticed mine takes approx. 10 minutes to get to running temperature at idle.

No, it begins at 1 bar temperature when started, and remains there for no matter how long I drive it (drove it for 1+ hour the other day, still remained at 1 bar temperature).

4th gens have digital readouts, so theres no needle

if you let it idle for a VERY long time, does it go up?

if not, it might be the sensor

check the tempature on each side of the thermostat. If its just about always the same tempature then your thermostat is stuck open. It shouldnt be the same temp on both sides until the thermostat opens once the car is warm( i think its like 180 or 190 from factory but i could be wrong).

I had this same issue with my 95 accord and it was a stuck open thermostat. BTW having that stuck open will most likely kill your mpg.

Cool, sounds good. I think I'm going to try the thermostat, mainly because I can't think of what else it can be. It's really weird, according to the temp gauge, the car never warms up, no matter how long I drive/idle. I'm going to change the thermostat, unless anyone can think of anything else.

dont just try a thermostat. Throwing parts at something is an easy way to waste money. Do the tests and diag the problem, then replace what needs to be replaced.
