Open face helmets
Would you use one? why or why not?
I find them more comfortable than the regular helmets, was going to order a Bell Mag 4, what you guys think? Any disadvantage over regular helmets?

Thanks

This is what I got http://www.bellracing.com/publ...il/44/ I found it to be a good compromise between open and closed. I prefer the having something that protects the bottom part of my face from anything that might come in the window or the top. Also it allows me to also be able to speak to my students without a intercom if need be. It breathes well and the front has ample room.
I'd just really hate to have my chin come in contact with a chunk of steering wheel or debris.

You run a higher risk of getting your mug smashed with an open face..
Why risk a permanent disfigurement over some money.
Spend the filthy green stuff and get the best protection you can get, and save the face!

I dont know about you, but when I go out I have my harness on... so I dont see how hitting the steering wheel is possible.
BTW I have a full faced helmet with ducting for a breather. Zcars have a tendency to build up exhaust fumes in the cockpit so I wanted fresh air.

The only reason I've ever thought about getting a Open face helmet is because sometimes I think people can barely hear me with my helmet on. Other than that its full face for me.
I have a bell m4 and it has a bigger opening around the mouth than my bell sport 3 did. Much easier to breathe and speak with the m4. Both helmets are closed face. No way would I wear an open face helmet on a roadcourse.

Personally, I plan on getting an open face (probably the same Bell originally posted) for Auto-X. The chances of something happening that would require a full face helmet are slim in such an event.
However, if I hit an open track day or real road coarse at speed, I would definately feel more comfortable in a full face.

Bingo. I've been using the Pyrotect Open Face Helmet for the past three Solo Seasons, (autox) and I love it.

I've got the same one as Toad, and love it. It's much more comfortable than a full face, which my last one was.
Besides, dental implants are pretty cheap these days.

Anything can happen in a race car... Broken glass, flying objects. Everything has a fail point, even a harness. So its not just the hitting your face into a wheel albeit not likely with a good properly installed harness..its a bit of everything and that makes me think .. Why leave anything to chance?

SUBJECT: Airbag Advisory
It has been brought to the attention of SCCA Technical Services that the use
of full-face or closed-face helmets while driving vehicles with active airbag
restraint systems may result in injuries in the event of a crash that deploys
the airbag. Because of the location of the steering wheel relative to a
driver’s position, the airbag axis is on a level with the driver’s chin. In a
crash with airbag deployment, contact with the chin area of a full-face
helmet can be so powerful “that the risk of fractures to the jaw cannot be
ruled out“ (Hubert Gramling, FIA Institute, FT3/AF, 18.5.1999). This applies
to vehicle that may be used in Solo, RallyCross, High Performance Car
Control Clinics, etc.
Therefore, it is highly recommended that full-face helmets not be used in
vehicles with functional airbag systems. Potentially more restrictive language
is currently being considered for 2005, which could appear in an early 2005
issue of FasTrack. If you have any questions, please contact the SCCA at
(800) 770-2055."

^^ Lol! thats got me thinking, mmm...
But I think I'll go with open face anyhow, I can't stand the full face ones, they're just too uncomfortable for me, feels like you're caged!

^that ***** hilarious!^
i was in a car accident that was a pretty freak accident kinda thing, but in the process of a guardrail going through my car (ie: shishkabob style in one door out the other) it broke my steering wheel off and my extra heavy skunk2 shift ****. im lucker than words can say that neither one f those two items smacked me in the face after being baseballed by an 85mph guardrail. these are the kind of things that are always a possibilty.
you might never put your car on its roof or have a need for a rollcage in any other way but would you race without one of those?

Couple notes to ponder:
-I can't talk loud enough or hear my students in Hondas on track. It has never happened, and I'm convinced it never will unless their car is totally stock. Even in almost completely stock cars I had this problem. Consequently, I'm not too worried about vocal communication.
-I've had lots of **** fly in the window and hit my visor (which I always leave down). The thought of those things (rocks, mostly-melted rubber, bees, etc.) hitting my eyeballs is more than enough to dissuade me from anything open-faced. The chaos that would ensue with said object lodged in my eye would also dissuade me (screaming like a nancy as I blindly drive into a wall or something).
-Being "comfortable" with respect to claustrophobia is a legitimate and important thing. I've had students who couldn't concentrate in close-faced helmets for that reason. If you're that freaked out, by all means wear an open-faced one. Just make sure to wear sunglasses too
Or, if you can tolerate the slightly more closed-ness of Toad's suggestion I'd suggest that first.
