Wastegates/Blowoff Valves???
Greetings.. While at the NOPI event at Moroso, I saw several cars that used 2 wastegates, one on the manifold and charge pipe. What is the benefit of this type setup? Can someone possibly shed some light on the pro's and con's of eliminating the wastegate on the manifold totally and using only a wastegate on the charge pipe instead to control boost. Is this even possible or safe? Thanks in advance.
using a wastegate on the charge pipe is nothing new. most guys use it to lower the boost levels on launch. its a great way to get the car out of the hole, it allows you to lower the boost to say 10psi. Basically you put the car up on anitlag/2 step and make say 20psi. but say the car launches good on 10psi. you set the "wastegate" on the charge pipe up with a 10psi spring, and run it off of a solenoid so that when the car is on the launch it bleeds off excess pressure from the piping. So basically the turbo is makeing 20psi, but the motor is only seeing 10. you can then close the wastegate on the piping, and the motor will see the full 20psi. There are different ways to set it up and use it, but I have seen it done this way on alot of fwd cars. I hope this kinda helps.
this is how it was explained to me:
the wastegate acts as a pop off valve for launch control. say they want 50 psi at launch (pulling numbers out of my ***) and they run 80 on the pass.
they spool the turbo all the way, use the waste gate to let only 50 in the engine, that way the turbos are at full song when the clutch comes out.
hope that makes sense.

i experimented with it some on my car last year. our spfwd cars dont seem to be making enough boost/power to need it. there are other ways to accomplish the same thing IMO

It's more for cars with adj clutches.. This way you can have consistent launches and clutch setups.. It's hard to setup a clutch when your launching at different boost levels..
