OT: VA211 meet-eat-drive 7/14/02
Fwd from some racer buddies.
Hope to see some folks there! -Jon

Long story short we are planning to spend this
coming Sunday the 14th of July having fun in
the mountains of north western Virginia and we
thought we would invite you because you know
what's up. So please tell everybody.
What we had in mind was a meet / group drive /
whatever. Specifically we are planning to meet at
Cooters Place ( http://www.cootersplace.com ) on
Route 211 outside Sperryville VA around 1300 hours
(or 1:00 pm for you civilians). It is less than 2 hours
from Washington DC, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg,
and Richmond if that helps.
Cooters is a barbecue joint owned and operated by
Ben Jones who played Cooter the friendly mechanic
on the tv show "The Dukes of Hazzard". The food i
s not bad but we really like their big grassy parking lot
as a place to assemble before going on 211 runs. We
might eat lunch and then go on 211 runs, or go on 211
runs and then eat lunch- Whatever.
For those of you who don't know - VA Route 211
is a seriously twisty road through a national forest
that goes up one of the blue ridge mountains, crosses
under Sky Line Drive, and goes back down the other
side of the mountain. It is 3 lanes wide - two lanes
up and one lane down - with guard rails. It has
something like 200 turns in 9 miles. It is the closest
thing to Deals Gap that Virginia has to offer. On
weekends you will see everything from packs of
crotch-rocket sportbikes to Porsche race cars making
runs up and down the mountain over and over again.
There are no real worries about street legality or speed
limits because the road is rarely patroled by police.
So here are directions:

Note- this event is not sponsored, endorsed, organized,
or the official responsibility of anybody in particular.
Nobody ever really got this email. Come to look, hang
out, ride along, drive slow, drive fast, or do whatever
you want. And enjoy at your own risk - but we definitely
hope to see you there!

I LOVED taking my ITR (God rest her soul) over the mountains going to JMU to see my g/f for the last year & a half she was there. No matter how tired I was driving on my way there, that stretch ALWAYS got my blood flowing. I'd see just how long I could stay above the VTEC changeover point as I went up the mountain. Made for some hellacious gas consumption, but put one helluva smile on my face.
