Default Locking Cam Gears For timing??!!

Just wanted to see how you guys lock your cam gears when you replace the timing belt on a Dual Cam. I got a acura service manual and (first time I see this) they say if you line up the cams to tdc there should be two holes on top of the cam holder you can slip a 5mm punch on each cam to lock them in place has anyone ever done this???

ya it works. the holes on my cams/cam holders are a little sloppy but it does work. but still, after you get the new belt on, turn the crank with a 19mm socket at least 2 turns then line up the tdc mark on the crank pulley and then look at your cam gears they should be lined up as well if not pull the belt off and try again

Yep that is correct, i never had an issue with getting the cams to stay relatively in position until i got my high lift JGE303's and had a hell of a time keeping them in place. The holes worked like a champ

Yes, the size is just a little different, and they are more towards the center of the head than off to the t-belt.

ok now i know wich one it is. So now that im comparing manuals from factory to helms in the factory manual it says when you putting the belt on to slip the belt over the exhaust cam then the intake for slack purposes. But in the helms it has them as intake first then exhaust does it really matter?

Im sure there is a PROPER procedure but ive never had an issue. I seem to change it up every time lol. IF your at TDC at the crank and both cams are in the proper positions the belt should slip on pretty obviously no matter which you start with. Personally i like to get the cams lined up and use very light pressure clamps to keep the belt in place while i slip the belt on the crank. Tensioner will pull the slack out.

The clamps work well, if you don't have any of those though, zipties work the same, just cut them off after.

Whichever one you put on first you want the slack to be on the tensioner side, so the tensioner can take up that slack and leave the rest tight.

Thats true makes sense. Well just thought id find out what the deal was with the cams seems alot of people on here dont know to lock the gears. I tried searching and people seem to have a hard time lining up the gears when in reality its pretty dang easy.
