will zc v-tech pass smog???
I just swapped in a zc v-tech single cam into my 95 civic ex last year and i was wondering if it will pass smog with no problem? The motor looks exactly like my d16z6! Any help would be nice.
What's wrong with visual? What exactly would it fail for? It's listed as a legit motor replacement in the smog tech's handbook.
OK, so you say it is OK to put a japan spec motor in an usdm car and it is listed in the handbook....Not. Why would they care about ecu's needing to be usdm then. The handbook states a replacement engine has to be offered in that model year in the US with either CA or Fed certification.
The ref is the only one to make this legal for us to smog. If it is not an USDM version no smog unless it has a BAR label.
Now You might be lucky and find a tech that is clueless on Honda's and he might just pass you.

That info came direct from the local referee from my area. He told me all that ZC stuff when I tried to obtain a BAR label for mine (which the ref said isn't necessary since the ZC is an equivalent motor as long as it's the same year as my car). And when I brought mine to a regular smog shop after that day, I told the guy to look it up and he said it was listed. So he smogged my car. Go figure.
In regards to the ECU, that is correct, you have to run it as the USDM equivalent (in this case a P28 for a D16Z6) which means the smog equipment has to be correct and matching per the original setup but the ZC itself is fine as is.
To be fair for this specific case, the OP said he swapped engines into an EX and didn't say he swapped ECUs or anything else.

One will say yes and one will say no. Ref's that is. You have to get the info from the one ref that is doing the testing. They are not all on the same page. And that is coming from my bar auditor.
Same with the smog tech's some might and some might not. I got to say the book is the final answer for me.
If it was me I would want a bar label so I don't have to worry about this same stuff the next time and the next etc...
