Default Limp mode without a CEL?

My buddy's RSX-S won't rev past 5k and it's throwing no code. Car is stock. Nothing is noticeable wrong. Scan tool picks up nothing. ECU reset also does nothing.

Any ideas?

Actually, yeah it was low on oil (below bottom hole) but no oil pressure light. This would limit rev's?

Is this while in neutral or while driving in gear? Top the oil off and see if the problem goes away.

Neutral it only rev's to 5k. He didn't tell me if it does it in gear but I assume it does. He might come by my place this weekend. If I have time...

definitely check the oil, I had a similar problem once, all it took was some oil and the problem was solved. Good Luck!

Yeah its called a rev limiter....Thats normal. If he cant rev past 5k while driving then there is a problem.

Yeah I know what a rev limiter is but you'd think it would throw a CEL or oil pressure light if that's the problem. I hope he has put more oil in it since we checked that a couple nights ago...

Oh so he's can't floor his car to redline while sitting still? I don't see the problem here.
Honda put a stop to that with the standing start rev limiter. Now if it won't go past 5k while moving then your have a problem.

Yup and why is he trying to rev it past 5k in neutral anyways?

Oh, he just got it and he/I didn't know about that. So all RSX-S's rev limit at 5k at stand still? I don't know if my EP does - never tried, never will.
