Default running in limp mode after swap

hey guys, i have a 99 civic ex that i just converted to 5 speed and swapped in a b16. i used a obd2a engine and componants and a obd2b automatic harness and im using a obd1 jumper harness with a jdm 5 speed p72 ecu but im running into some probloms. when i start it up, it runs for about 10sec before the check eng light comes on and then its in safe mode, it wont pop vtec and it revs to 7k rpms only, im just wondering if im missing somthin in the engine swap that im supposed to do or was it in the convertion to 5 speed, could use some pointers.
Thanks, mike

Find out what CEL code you are throwing. Can't really do much until you find out what is triggering the CEL.

I second that!... We can't help you much unless you know what cel code your car is throwing at you. I believe its a small brown, two wire plug above the ecu area. Bridge it with a paper clip, or a wire. Then turn your car key to the ignition position and see the pattern of the check engine light. Every long pause stands for ten.... every short pause stands for one...

So if there's two long blinks, and three short ones, thats code 23.

Good luck...

Well, I looked up the codes for you, each one has a common theme; ECU.

I had this when I did my D to B conversion back last summer sounds the same if it is then its your fast idle control valve you'll need to change it, its on the inlet manifold easy ehough to get to and change takes about 20 mins.

Other than that and I'm not telling you to suck eggs but have you wired in or do you have the map sensor fitted in correctly as the first lot of codes you put up would indicate that as part of you problems.

Hope this helps.

It should be on top of your throttle body. I noticed you listed the codes numerically. What code actually came first? That is where you should start your search?

thats the order they came. its idleing fine but it wont pop vtec. ive heard that because its a jdm engine and im using a usdm harness you have to change the the wiring for vtec, is that true or do i have to chip it for jdm vtec or what.

I hope you're kidding... there's no such thing as JDM VTEC. You have an EX so your harness is already wired for VTEC. You can use the JDM P72 as-is.

You said you're using an OBD1 jumper harness, your stock OBD2B auto harness, and an OBD2A engine. Your problems most likely lies in your mish-mash of wiring. To start, you can use your OBD2B auto harness, but you need to do the IACV plug fix. Read this:

The OBD2A difference of the engine doesn't matter and your engine harness plugs into all the sensors fine.

I'm assuming your JDM P72 is OBD1 or else the OBD1 adapter harness is worthless. Even though JDM ECUs run the equivalent of USDM ODB1 emissions requirements, the pinouts are OBD2A equivalent for most ECUs unless 99 or later. If your P72 is 96+ then you need an OBD2B (chassis) -> OBD2A (ECU) adapter harness. If it is actually OBD1, make sure your harness is OBD2B -> OBD1.

of course it's gonna throw codes and run like crap. the gs-r has secondary butterflys and b16 doesn't, the ecu automatically detects that. you need a obd1 p30 ecu or a chipped obd1 p28 ecu
