Default Help a n00b Part II: Civic restoration (Paint and body)

Given a typical early 90's Civic, complete with a paintjob that's sloughing off and Hondarot, (not too extreme, average) how much can you expect to pay a reputable shop to:

-Strip the paint and prep
-Cut/replace/bondo/rebondo all rot
-Paint and multiple clearcoat

a hatch or a coupe? What kinda prices have you guys been seeing?

if you can try doing some of the work yourself...it will save you tons of money...

depends on ALOT of things....it's such a case by case thing.

quality of paint system they use, amount of hammering and welding they do vs. filler, how many dings and other flaws need attention, how many surprises they find once moldings and strip comes off, etc etc etc etc. the list is crazy.

i'd say 3k+ is an average number for a real beater with some typical issues, with a healthy split of welding vs. filler, and a decent paint brand used.

the suggestion about doing as much prep as possible yourself is good, however, it's gotta be done right, and many paint and body guys are artists that prefer to do it their way. also, if stuff isn't done right, but assumed that it is, a nice paint job can eventually show the shoddy prep.

Most painters I know won't touch a home-made body repair. Your paint job is only as good as the prep job underneath it.

or they will not warranty it, it's very understandable why.

i am fine just painting your prepped car but i would have you sign a wavier saying i am not being responsible for any prep(or lack there of) related problem in the future.
