Hello guys I'm new to the site and I tried searching for a diy paint thread sorry in advance for starting a new one. I'm seeking some advice on car paint. It's my first time attempting to paint my car on my own. I bought an HVLP spray gun from harbor freight and am borrowing a 60 gallon compressor. I have done all the body work and repaired the dents on the trunk from hail damage. Im not the best at body work but I also don't wanna pay for a professional paint job since I just plan on using it as a daily driver. I plan on painting it all black again. What primer, paint reducer and paint brand do you guys recommend? I was looking for something decent nothing too expensive. Tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Depends on location and paint supply store on the cheapest products acilable to you.
Body filler in my town costs $15/gallon. 30 miles south same filler is $23/gallon.
Heres what I see the cheapest though.
PCL primer. Will give you a nice build and hide any scratches up to 220 grit.
It is about $80/gallon here.
As for your reducer. H.E.T. Is dirt cheap. $25/gallon here.
Since you are, painting the car black again, a cheap way to do it without paying a lot is to just ask for a gallon of factory pack black form your local paint supplier. Giving them a color code, they will charge about $40-$50/quart.
The factory pack black sells here in a gallon for $110 and is made by transtar.
The factory pack black may be a tiny bit different color black than factory, but no one will notice and it is a lot cheaper.
$135for 2 sprayable gallons of paint. Great deal.
Clear coat, evercoat clear goes for $85/gallon here. Chepest in town.
These are the prices I would pay here. Giving you a rough estimate.
Just give your local supplier a call and ask them the prices on the pack black gallon and ask the prices of their clear and primer.
Try to negotiate a little if you buy all of it from them.
