vtec kicking in?
alright, if my vtec solenoid is out of commission then the ecu would be throwing codes right? i know about checking it by running a jumping wire to the positive battery terminal and listening for the click but my curiosity cant wait till i get home this evening.....i've had it up between 4600rpm and 5600rpm but haven't felt the slightest kick.....FYI its the d16z6 in an 89 lx converted to obd1 with the p28. let me know!!

You shouldn't feel a "kick" , vtec is not a turbo. It should be a smooth engagement. The misconception that "vtec gives you a kick" probably comes from GSR's secondary IM runner opening around the vtec engagement point.
As long as you can rev past where the vtec engages you should be fine.

Havn't done alot of reading on the b16 engine, so I really can't comment on that :\
The B18C1 engine most people mistake the opening of the short intake runners as a VTEC Kick.
Here is a dyno of a GSR with I/H/E
Now just by looking at the graph it looks like there is a big vtec kick in HP&TQ right at 6,000rpm!
When in actuallity, VTEC engaged at 4400 rpm. Its not until 5800+ rpm that short runners open and lets more air into the cylinders. Thats the increase in HP&TQ right there.
That may be different for a b16 though.

at 4400rpm i do get a slight kick in my B18C, but nothing compared to a turbo'd motor, there is a greater 'kick' at 5800rpm when the secondaries open!
