Possible New GSR Owner!! Questions!!
I am tired of my current car, a Mitsubishi 3000GT. It is pretty quick, but seems to take up all my money. I can not afford it anymore.
I am looking to move to something that is more reliable, good on gas, somewhat unique, yet still decently quick. After looking at some GSRs, I found that they are well within my price range and still have decently low miles (98, 99 for 5-6 grand w\ 70-80k miles seems to be the craigslist average). I do not plan on ricing it up lol.
I do have some questions though since I am new to the honda scene.
I originally posted this in the Integra TYPE-R forum, and was told to post this topic here. Is a GSR not a type R? What are the differences?
What exactly is the GSR, how does it differ from the regular integra?
Does the GSR have the b-18 or b-20? I have seen both of them mentioned on ads. What is the differences in these motors and what should I look for
How would you rate the GSR in terms of reliability?
How qould you rate the GSR in terms of "easy to maintain"? My 3000GT is a nightmare. Working on it is not easy. Almost nothing is in accessable reach. You must remove 10 other parts just to get to one so to speak.
Anything else I should know?
Thank you

do you really have to ask these questions??? have you ever read an issue of "consumer reports"? just compare honda with mitsubishi... night and day. ANY similar model between the two. seriously, night and day. there were/are very few vehicles honda messed up on and the integra is definitely not one of them. honda reliability is on par with toyota.
Jomama, no need to be an ***. I never said the integra sucked. Why would I say that when I am thinking of buying one?
When did I say the 3000GT and integra are similar? I can't find that anywhere in my post. I was just asking questions about the integra, as this is a platform I know nothing about.
Anyway, one more question.
Why do some integra I see on the ads have a b-20? This is a swap I would assume.

lol, reading PWNs you.
i don't mean to be one, but these are really basic questions... would i go into toyota forum and ask "how is the camry?" the ford forum and ask "how is the mustang?" the bmw forum and ask "how is the new 3 series?"
, you get the point. search before you get flamed. i actually thought i was being helpful in aluding to your checking out "consumer reports."
i never said you said the integra sucked.
i never said you were saying the 3000GT and integra were similar. my comment with "similar" was just a general comment to compare similar models when you look at a consumer reports to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges as this will give you better comparisons if and when you do compare. for example, compare the eclipse with an integra.
the ads you see of integras with b20s are integras with a CRV swap. if you live in states with stricter laws, say California, i'd stay away from those unless you want to have your hood possibly popped and your car impounded due to having a "truck" engine in a "passenger car" vehicle.
btw, asking "are the type-Rs and the GSRs similar" is like asking... "are the 3000GT VR-4s the same as the others?"
i'm not trying to excessively flame you, but if you can't take some criticism for asking some really basic questions when buying a vehicle and then some pointers, all i can say are four letters: "G," "T," "F," and "O." now i will not waste any more time, GTFO, and get back to work.

OP, just read through the links I posted. Most of your answers will be in there.
ITR is the top model, then goes GSR, then ls/gs/se/rs.
Integra's only had B18C1, B18C5's, and B18B1's (for 94-01 models). the C5's were in ITR's, the C1's were in GSR's and the B1's were in the base models.
B20's are from CRV's, so yes, it'd be a swap.
Read up and learn, that's what I did three years ago.

Sorry guys, one more question I have.
Is the acura integra's engine (b-18c) an interference type? If the timing belt fails will the valves hit the pistons?

hey man there are ******** on here and there are those that just try to help others out...honda buddy or not...don't worry about the way people react to you...theres always someone out there willin to help...
i've been an integra owner for about 3 months now and i love my gsr...it took me 10 months to find but i finally found an '01 gsr with 83k for 6 stacks...i think its well worth it if you are dedicated enough...maybe thats not the right word i should be using
differences between Type - R and GS - R: like i sed, i'm a new integra owner so at my perspective, there is no difference... they both come stock with a B18c engine, its just that the Type - R has more higher performance "stuff" on it. For instance, if you see two cars that look the same, same engine and everything, one could have high lift cams, low compression pistons, performance intake manifold...those are the differences i am talking about...other than that, there really is no difference that i see..if you want you can really build your own Type - R motor out of a GS - R
There are different models of integras (i'm sorry if i miss a few)
- GS
- LS
- SE
- GS - R
- Type - R
the GS is the lowest of them all, it is only SOHC (Single Overhead Cam), Non - VTEC
The LS is next on the list: It only has DOHC (Dual Overhead Cams), Non - VTEC
The SE (Special Edition) in my opinion is no different from the LS: It has the same engine setup (DOHC NON - VTEC) and just has the badge on the side of the car that says "Special Edition" with maybe a trim on the car and thats about it
The GS - R is where it starts to get competetive: It is stock with DOHC VTEC...1.8L and i believe all the others are 1.8 as well...higher redline...higher compression...i would say this is more bang for your buck
The Type - R is now considered as a collector's item: People like the Type - R because of the engine, just comes stock with better performance parts than the
GS - R does... That's why you see this car go for around 15k in some cases...
As I said previously, the GS - R comes stock with a B18c engine...Not a B20...the B20 is an engine swap but still a great block..since you're not gonna completely push the car, I would look for a B18. Yes, it has high compression but you could change that if you want to with some low compression pistons, eagle rods, at least thats the setup i would do..Otherwise if you're going to be on the track A LOT with it, get a B20 if you can find it...
In terms of Reliability: This is an opinion question... I think the car is reliable...I dont' have problems with it and when I do, they're easy to fix...Honda engines are so easy to take apart and put back together...
- As far as fuel economy...that all depends on how you drive... I usually get between 170 - 180 miles to a full tank...but then again I will admit..I drive like an idiot out here...I'm sure you can get 230 out of a full tank...i would guess at least
As far as maintenance on the engine: like i said, it's a honda engine...they're small but has a kick to it...the engine is big and with a small engine...its easy to access everything without taking out other parts to get to the one you want.
overall, I think this car is a great car, for you at least... the B18 would go best in my opinion so you don't plan on completely pushing it...But then again what do i know...i'm just a 3 month integra owner...i appreciate the fact that you at least learn about the car before buying it as opposed to getting it because everyone says its cool...but if you have a hard time finding one, it won't matter if you really want it...remember I started searching May of last year and found one January this year...it takes time...They're all out there...like i said, i got mine for 6 grand with a b18c, mods on it, and a jdm front end...but good luck witht he search
let me know if this helped or not and update us with what's goin on
peace

Hey man, I'm just updating on some info that isn't quite true.
1. The GS model is a DOHC engine. It is the B18B, and is a "higher" trim model than the LS (came with alloy wheels I believe, and I think pin striping too. yay for pin striping
)
2. The B20 swap is NOT a good idea. Not only do you not have any history about the engine or who did the swap, but the B20 swappers out there usually put a VTEC head on the B20 block. This is where you REALLY start to have problems! There was a reason that Honda used a shortened stroke for their B-series VTEC and that's because longer stroked engines can't safely be revved as high.
The B18C1 (GSR engine) actually has a shorter stroke than the B18B (RS, LS, GS, SE engine) for this reason of higher revving. The Type R, which revvs even higher, has beefed up connecting rods because of this.
3. Finally, you get 180 miles to a tank!?!?!?!? In my GSR I get anywhere between 325 to 350 miles to the tank! About twice as much as you! Man you must have not filled your tank up that much, or are driving it with your foot to the floor EVERYWHERE. In my other GSR though I drove like a maniac and got 275 to the tank still!
To address the question about the timing belt, yes, the valves could possibly strike the piston if it snaps. Which is WHY we change the timing belts ON TIME!!! And the water pump too...
A guy I know has a 3000GT and my friend raced him in his LS Integra (B18B) and beat him on the launch. after the launch, they were pretty much even. The GSR is a decent amount faster than the 3000GT, I know this from personal experience.

^yup, the RS is the base model
RS/LS/GS/SE = B18B1
GSR = B18C1
ITR = B18C5
^all of them our DOHC and the GSR/ITR have VTEC.

Although, RS's are awesome I think, because they make great project cars for Type-R replicas, and you can find them for pretty cheap these days (in need of a restoration anyway) to take a little bit of cost off of such a venture, but if your looking just to buy a car to have some fun in, I think a newer, good condition teg FTW!!! GSR or LS, you'll like it better than the 3000GT lol
I have owned two gsr's, one turbo and one supercharged. Loved both, still have the turbo and my brother has my supercharged one now. . . i would highly recommend a gsr. . . If you are not going to get a type r
Heh. I would highly prefer a GSR though. I am not selling my car to "downgrade" myself to a lowly base model. GSR is the cream of the integra crop. ITR is just out of my price range
get the $9k 97 ITR sold by ArmyGreenITR in florida in ITR FS/WTB vehicle thread and call it a day; https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2265083

all gen 3 integras come with a WHOPPPING 1.8 liters. (b18)
integras are top notch in reliability. They only have problems because most people here mod the crap out of their cars and abuse them.
Integras are very easy to maintain, there is a lot of room in the engine bay to work.
i get about 340 miles on 10.x gallons. about 31mpg mixed.
Theft is horrible on integras. security is a must, garage would definitely help.
oh yeah these cars have no torque, so get use to it

I wish I could get the IRT, but I just do not have 9k to spend
. I am hoping to get 5 for my GT and I have a little extra cash.
Theft shoulden't be a problem since I really don't visit the "darker side of town" too often. I choose to stay where it is Sunny
