Excited - Chipping (well rechipping) my first ECU
Hey everyone,
I recently acquired a chipped P28 in a trade for my stock P13 and have already ordered the necessary parts to socket it (depressingly it was soldered straight in). I'm a fairly good at soldering/desoldering as I build boards and what not for a professor of mine at college.
So with that being said I have a few questions:
1) I build a USB programmer at work that's used to flash PIC microprocessor chips, the software we use is PiCKIt 2. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? PickIt only burns HEX documents to the PIC controller so I know I can't use that software but the burner should work for the Atmel chip on the ECU correct? (I'm not at school and don't have it desoldered yet so I can't try)
If it does work those programmers only cost $35 vs the like 80+ I've seen on other sites so if someone needs one I can hook them up
2) In regards to the two .1uF capacitors I've seen listed (ref: http://www.superhonda.com/tech....html) Are they really necessary? I bought them and will probably be putting them in, I was told they were strictly noise reduction to clean up the signals.
3) In regards to Crome/Uberdata I downloaded both packages and some maps and took a look, and Crome seems immediately more user friendly. Is that because it's dumbed down and has less features ? Or just that it is a bit more intuitive? Uberdata confused me with it's Ostrich/Reg release deal where for datalogging you have to like open a base in Ostrich, then the one you want to flash, then close it , then open it in the regular to size it properly? Does anyone else have any input? I will probably be running around on a H22A I/H/E P28 tune done by Matt Shue of Richmond I found for download on pgmfi's site. Will this be detrimental to my car in any way? I understand that base maps aren't meant for you to stay on forever but as a temporary solution until I can get it fully tuned will it work fine?

1. You don't need them. We have never seen negative results without them.
2. Considering it sounds like you have a basic setup, crome should be fine.
Crome is much more user friendly then uberdata & in my opinion has a better platform. I would personally recommend you look into Neptune, eCtune, Hondata if you are seriously thinking of DIY tuning. You will thank your self later on down the road
Running on a basemap can be a bad idea if you don't know where the basemap really came from etc. On an n/a setup that is basic like yours, you really won't take a huge risk of engine damage.

I appreciate the help mtber.
I am planning on playing around with the tuning to see what I can find, hadn't even heard of eCtune and Neptune I've seen a bit here and there about.
Thanks

Thanks for the help zccr
I actually found the site before you posted haha and downloaded the latest crome and the latest uberdata (from pgmfi)
I'm going to play with it, I think the only "tuner" in my area uses Uberdata

Got everything soldered up and it's working great!
I'm now socketed (ZIF with the raised up socket) and added the two capacitors.
Now I have a question, where are you guys buying the Atmel chips? Only place I can find is JDR and they want $25 + shipping!
