Adjusting timing through my dizzy???
Hey guys searched but found no answers can I advance or retard me timing through my dizzy?? I know it can be done I just dont know how?? May sound like a dumb question, but its something I have never done. Any help would be appreciated!
timing light, and a clue...
if you retard your timing, youll lose all power and efficency.
if you advance your timing, you can destroy your engine.
that is if its already in spec, if you dont know what your doing, then dont do it the only reason you should adjust timing is if you had to remove the distributor and you didnt mark where you took it out from.
get a helms if you dont already have one. it will have a timing procedure in there.

the ignition timing from the factory is set at 16 btdc on a b18c1. as long as you run premium in it and everything else mechanical is alright you would be alright to set your timing to 18 btdc. my buddy set his to 19 btdc with an adjustable timing light on a dynojet 248 and picked up about 5whp with the i/h/e mods he already had. put if you are going to add ignition timing id make sure you run premium in it. also make sure everything else with the car is fine. make sure you jump the blue plug on the passenger side otherwise the car will fight the timing adjustments you make. the c-speedracing link that was posted is a good link to see how to do it.
assuming that your timing belt was put on correctly (the crank was set on TDC and the cams were properly aligned) you'll be able to adjust your timing by loosening the 3, 12mm bolts that hold the distributor onto the head and rocking it either forward or back. moving it forward (to the front of the car) is going to advance it and moving it back ( to the rear or the car) is going to retard it really its simple but remember you can mess up your ride if you dont know what you're doing read up some more before you go diving into doing this. If you're looking to get a power gain this isnt a way to do it the system was designed to compensate for gaps in timing to achieve TDC in ignition timing.
