Is the code that shot on my 96 dx last night. My question in is, do I need to purchase a new cat or how can iI go about getting my old cat flushed?

you should either get a used part at a yard, or take this opportunity to upgrade the exhaust.

If you have under 150,000 miles on the car, Honda may fix it for free under the federal 14 year/150,000 mile emissions warranty extension for '96-97 model year vehicles.

Otherwise, you need to get a new cat/manifold. You may also need to get the oxygen sensors, depending on whether the old ones come out easily or not. I've seen them seize in there before . . .

It is illegal to install a used catalytic converter (why, I don't know, it just is), so most legit salvage yards won't sell them used, though there may be other means of obtaining one (backdoor buddy, eBay, classifieds, etc.).

The OE cat/manifold is about $600 without any shields. You can find aftermarket replacements for $300-ish, and they usually come with all shields - however, the cheaper ones are not CARB-certified, so you may run into a problem with those for CA emissions. Oxygen sensors are usually $75-100 for an NTK or Denso, respectively.

Or you could just drive it around with the light on until you're due for an emissions test, at which time you'll have to repair it. It won't hurt anything to drive it like that.
